Hello,
My name is Karen Romero Estrada. I was born and raised in Anaheim and I reside in District 2. Over the last few days, federal Immigrations and
Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have terrorized our communities in a series of raids across Orange County, impacting our neighbors, our loved
ones, and our children. These actions are escalating uncertainty and fear, impacting people's ability to make a living and their ability to live a
dignified and safe life we all deserve.
I am respectfully urging you to heed to OC Youth Movement's recommendations for a community ale rt syste m to notify residents
when ICE is in the City of Anaheim. A transparent alert system, similar to how we are notified of emergencies such as fires or flooding, would
allow residents to make informed decisions and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. This is about ensuring due
process, which is a fundamental right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. The City of Los Angeles is exploring a notifying system for its residents.
The City of Anaheim can and should lead in creating one for the City of Anaheim.
I urge the City to further explore and implement policies that protect all residents in Anahe im. The ICE raids have a potential to not only
impact people on a psychological level due to the fear and stress they may cause, but the raids are also impacting our local and regional economy.
However, immigrants are more than their labor. They are a fabric of Anaheim ever since its inception by German settlers.
I am unable to attend in person; however, I respectfully urge you Council Member Leon to do everything in your powe r to protect
undocumented, legalized and naturalized immigrants.
Sincerely,
Karen Romero Estrada
