OLDER ADULTS COMMISSION

AGENDA ACTION TAKEN
1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice -Chair Barnes called the meeting to order at 2:01 p.m
2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Vice -Chair Barnes led the Commission in reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance.
3. WELCOME NEW COMMISSIONER: Vice -Chair Barnes introduced new Commissioner Irene Rose.
4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Vice -Chair Barnes presented the minutes of the February 20, 2025,
meeting. Commissioner Noteboom made a motion for approval of the minutes, seconded by
Commissioner Brio. The minutes were approved with five ayes and abstention by Vice -Chair Barnes.
5. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Janet Brown, representative from Congressman Lou
Correa's office, reported that cuts in the Federal government will be affecting seniors, and the
Congressman would like to have meetings with his constituents to hear about issues that he may be
able to assist with. She noted that she watched the City Council meeting that addressed the issues
of seniors in the City and that the local Channel 3 will be having commercials to highlight programs for
older adults. Community Services Superintendent Brian Chwan expanded on the process of working
with the Public Information Office to put together the announcements, and Community Services
Supervisor Maureen Richardson added that the PIO office has been posting on Facebook about the
Older Adults Program as well. Janet Brown also mentioned that she toured the Salvation Army facility
on North Street and noted that they are interested in having programs specifically for older adults.
They are hoping to reopen their pool, and they have a food pantry as well. They are looking for board
members and coaches, and she encouraged everyone to check out the facility.
Community Services Superintendent Brian Chwan thanked Janet Brown for her past service and
leadership on the commission and her continued advocacy for the commission.
6. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None.
7. NEW BUSINESS:
a. Election of Commission Chair/Vice-Chair — Brian Chwan also welcomed Irene Rose to the
commission. He noted that since the commission chair's term has ended, it will be necessary to
hold an election for a new chair and/or vice -chair, and he opened the floor for nominations.
Commissioner Brio nominated Vice -Chair Barnes for chair, seconded by Commissioner Noteboom.
Vice -Chair Barnes accepted the nomination; the vote was unanimous. Chair Barnes called for a
nomination for vice -chair. Commissioner Noteboom nominated Commissioner Brio, seconded by

Commissioner Baltazar; Commissioner Brio accepted the nomination. Community Services
Superintendent Brian Chwan called for a vote; the vote was unanimous.
b. Letter to City Council — Brian Chwan noted that he wanted to revisit the letter to City Council with
the new commission and asked for them to give their approval before it is sent to City Council;
Commissioner Rose reviewed the letter, and they informally approved it.
8. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Vice -Chair Brio inquired about a replacement for Commissioner Beas, who
resigned from District 3 in January. Community Services Superintendent Brian Chwan reported that a
replacement has not been appointed at this time. Commissioner Noteboom inquired whether there is a
way to communicate with seniors in the city by district; Brian Chwan listed some ways the city has to
send out communications to residents. Commissioner Noteboom asked about the presentation on
Older Adults that Joe Perez made before City Council; Brian Chwan noted that we could bring that to
the next meeting so everyone could see it and perhaps show it at the neighborhood district meetings.
9. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS:
a. Blue Zones, Aginq & Longevity —Commissioner Real shared some information about Alzheimer's
Disease and distributed a paper about grandparents' roles in families to the commission.
b. Orange County Resource Site for Seniors — Community Services Superintendent Brian Chwan will
be sharing information to the commission regarding the mobile app for the Office on Aging which
provides senior resources directly to your phone.
c. Commission Name Change Update; Older Adults Commission — Brian Chwan formally announced
that the commission name has changed to Older Adults Commission.
d. Commissioner Real announced that he will be speaking at the Senior Citizen Club at their July
meeting. He also mentioned that last month's Courier highlighted Vice -Chair Brio in the Senior
Spotlight, and he is highlighted in the Senior Spotlight of the new issue.
e. Chair Barnes would like to add items for commercials on Channel 3 or items of interest for seniors
to the agenda. Commissioner Noteboom would like to also add the discussion for a new senior
center.
10. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Barnes adjourned the meeting at 2:55 p.m.
