Library 2025/07/14ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD MEETING MINUTES MEETING LOCATION Central Library 500 W. Broadway Anaheim, CA 92805 DATE/TIME July 14, 2025 4:30 p.m. CALL TO ORDER — The agenda having been posted on July 10, 2025; the regular meeting of the Anaheim Public Library Board of Trustees was called to order by Chair Linda Newby at 4:33 p.m. PRESENT: Rose Chen, Jackie Filbeck, Linda Newby, Elia Renteria-Garcia, Amanda Wortman STAFF: Audrey Lujan — City Librarian, Scott Fretwell — Principal Librarian, Jennifer Foxx Management Assistant II GUEST: Dr. Michelle Dang I. INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: A. ADMINISTER OATH TO LIBRARY BOARD MEMBERS JACKIE FILBECK AND AMANDA WORTMAN: The Oath of Affirmation of Allegiance for Public Office and Employees was administered to Jackie Filbeck and Amanda Wortman. B. FRIENDS OF THE ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT: Library staff members Joe Purtell and Jon Andersen assisted the Friends in submitting an application for Samueli funding to convert the media room to a Friends book sale area. They are also exploring a possible partnership with Store One to include a coffee shop, ghost bakery, etc. to raise additional funds for the Friends. Funds raised by the Friends are used to sponsor the summer reading program and many other programs for the Library. C. FRIENDS OF THE CANYON HILLS LIBRARY: The new slate of officers will be presented at the July 17, 2025, meeting. They are also presenting Bradley Marienfeld and Ariana Zanganeh from Canyon High School with a $500 scholarship each. The next Flash Sale is July 29th, and 30th, from 10:00 a.m. — 3:00 p.m. and will feature books and jigsaw puzzles. FOCAL is the beneficiary for trust funds from a local resident. The Teddy Bear Picnic, funded by FOCAL, was a huge success. D. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY FOUNDATION REPORT: The 29th Annual Mystery Author's Luncheon will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Adam Sikes will be the moderator. The luncheon will feature a panel of historical mystery authors, Nancy Silverman, Catriona McPherson, and Gary Phillips. All are invited to the Anaheim Public Library Foundation meetings. Please call Library Administration for more information. E. COMMUNICATION FROM OTHERS: The Library Board recognized outgoing Library Board Member Dr. Michelle Dang for her contributions to the community and the Library Board. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE JUNE 9, 2025, MEETING: The minutes were approved as presented. III. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: A. ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL ON THE CONDITION OF THE LIBRARIES FOR FISCAL YEAR 2024/25 PER ARTICLE IX. APPOINTIVE BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS, SECTION 908: The Library Board will consider what the report should focus on for this fiscal year. IV. NEW BUSINESS: A. APL/AESD PARTNERSHIP FOR LITERACY: A literacy partnership between APL and AESD is being established to raise reading scores and maximize the usage of APL's online resources. APT, resources will be featured in the AESD newsletter, Library staff will be attending AESD schools to promote programs, and APT, services are being advertised on the school marquees. Thank you to Jackie Filbeck, who is also an AESD Board Member, for initiating this project. B. STUDENT SUCCESS: Student Success, formerly ACES (A Card for Every Student) is a program in which every student in the AESD, Centralia School District, AUHSD, and Servite High School receive an online library card to access APL's valuable resources. Scott Fretwell presented APL's online resources available to elementary school students. V. INFORMATION A. CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: • The APT, Community Survey was launched on June 2, 2025. The goal is to receive at least 3,000 responses. • The Haskett Makerspace Grand Opening will be late September or early October. • The Summer Reading Program participation is surpassing last year's statistics. BOARD ITEMS MEMBER ELIA RENTERIA-GARCIA: Is excited about the possibility of a Friends area expansion and a possible partnership with Store One. MEMBER JACKIE FILBECK: Welcomed Amanda to the Library Board. MEMBER AMANDA WORTMAN: Appreciated the Haskett Makerspace tour by Haskett Branch Library staff Magali Rivera and Alexa Zamorano. VICE CHAIR ROSE CHEN: Appreciates the work of Library staff CHAIR LINDA NEWBY: Is impressed by the statistics, especially the children's collection statistics. VIII. MISCELLANEOUS A. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be August 11, 2025, at the Central Library. B. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Newby adjourned the meeting at 5:43 p.m.
