I l i ve d through the Canyon Fi re 2. I w as one of the re si de nts trapped i n a car that di dn’t move f or ove r an hour w hi l e the f i re came tow ard us.
That w asn’t “inconve ni e nt.” It was te rri fyi ng. It was the ki nd of moment you don’t forge t be cause you ge nui ne l y don’t know i f you’re goi ng to
ge t out. Our e vacuati on routes alre ady fail unde r pressure . That is a fact, not an opi ni on.
So w he n I se e re ports clai mi ng this project wi l l add “only” seve n minute s to evacuation time s, i t f e e l s l i ke a sl ap i n the face . Se ve n mi nute s i n a
w i l dfire e vacuation i s not smal l . It is not acceptable. It i s the ki nd of delay that costs l i ves. A nd e ve ryone w ho l i ve s he re knows we have no
al te rnate route s, no backup roads, no e xtra capacity. We bare l y make it out as it is.
A ddi ng hundre ds of apartme nts and more than a thousand ne w residents to a known choke poi nt i s re ckl e ss. It show s a compl e te di sre gard for
the pe ople who alre ady live here and have alre ady ex pe rienced the dange r firsthand. It te l l s us that our safe ty i s ne goti abl e — and i t
absol ute ly is not.
