Brandon Guffey, and Sarah O’Quinn Dear CRAIG, The movement to hold Big Tec h ac countable for how their products harm our c hildren is a global one. And all across the world, policymakers are increasingly stepping up to put guardrails on social media and other addictive tech. In a watershed moment, Spain has just become the first European country to propose banning soc ial media for kids under 16, and the Spanish government is also devising a plan to hold social media c ompanies liable for illegal, hateful or harmful c ontent on their platforms. At the same time, the European Union is demanding changes to TikTok’s addic tive design, stating that its endless sc roll and other features violate EU law for online safety and pose potential harm to the "phy sical and mental well-being” of kids and other users. At MAMA, we are determined to ensure that our politicians here in the U.S. follow these global examples and take swift, meaningful action to protect kids. Last week, I was proud to join survivor parents, including Kristin Bride of Parents Rise!, along with the Center on Countering Digital Hate, Issue One, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) and ac tor and advocate (and dad) Joseph Gordon-Levitt in W ashington, D.C. to push for reforms to Section 230. This outdated policy shields soc ial media companies from legal responsibility for harmful content promoted on their platforms, enabling major tec h companies to avoid liability even when their produc ts c ause unthinkable suffering. At a press conferenc e led by Sen. Dick Durbin, several parents spoke movingly about the c hildren they have lost to soc ial media. That included Kristin, whose son Carson died by suicide after he experienc ed intense cyberbullying, as well as Bridgette Noring, who tragic ally lost her son to fentany l poisoning after he encountered a drug dealer on Snapc hat. Let’s continue to take these inc redible parent activists as inspiration, a deeply powerful reminder of why we are all in this fight. Not backing down, J ulie Updates from MAMA HQ W E DID IT!! Last week, South Carolina Governor Henry Mc Master signed the Age- Appropriate Design Code into law, establishing that social media c ompanies have a clear “duty of care” to protec t kids from harmful content on their platforms, while also requiring these c ompanies to responsibly handle minors’ personal data, rein in addic tive features, and stop targeting kids with surveillance advertising. Passage of this bill was a two-y ear effort for MAMA in the face of relentless opposition from Big Tech, and the tech giants aren’t done fighting yet. One of the major tech lobby ing groups has already filed a lawsuit to challenge this critically important legislation. W e thank Gov. McMaster, State Rep. Brandon Guffey, our Fort Mill Chapter Leader Kimberly Long and all our advoc acy partners for helping us protec t our kids and for staying in the fight against media addiction! And special thanks to all South Carolina MAMA community members who helped make this victory happen by ensuring our voices were heard. In Nebraska, state senators have introduced new legislation that would create safeguards to protect minors from the growing threats of AI.The proposed legislation would require c ompanies to c learly disc lose when a user is communicating with a chatbot and not a real person, prohibit these companies from instituting a reward system for continuous use, and prevent AI chatbots from generating any sexually explicit content or interactions. Our Omaha MAMA Chapter Leader Michele Neily (above) testified in support of the bill and shared her c oncerns about how kids are becoming increasingly reliant on AI technology : "Two in three teens use AI c hatbots, and 12% have turned to them for emotional or mental health support." A lawyer for the plaintiffs called the case as “easy as ABC…addicting the br ains of children.” He also shared communication of Meta employees discussing how Instagram is “like a drug” and that employ ees are “basically pushers.” Additional internal doc uments revealed that a Meta researcher warned in 2020 that 500,000 kids a day were being targeted by ‘c reeps’ on Fac ebook and Instagram. A similar trial is underway in New Mexico foc used on whether Meta misrepresented the safety of its platforms when it comes to the dangers of c hild sexual exploitation. LEADERSHIP In the wake of landmark social media trials, we are starting to see more political candidates standing up to Big Tech and supporting policies that would protec t kids. And no surprise - it’s starting with moms. Michigan State Sen. Mallor y McMor row, a c andidate for U.S. Senate, (whose bio includes the description “Noa's mom”) just rolled out a new set of proposals designed to take action on kids’ online safety and put safeguards on AI, which she explains in this video. VULNERABLE More than 1 in 3 teen boys report gambling in the last y ear, and nearly 60% of them say the content “just started showing up” on their social media algorithms. Tim Daly, a longtime education expert who writes the EdDaly substack, warns that legalized and heavily marketed gambling is quietly becoming a major threat to teens— especially boys. USA Today investigative reporter Nick Penzenstadler spoke with The Excerpt podcast about how regulators are doing little to nothing to stop it. CAUTION In a c onversation with ABC News about AI technology , Anthr opic co-founder Daniela Amodei expressed c oncerns about the risks of AI for her children and other kids, acknowledging that “we still have a lot of work to do” to mitigate AI’s potential harms. Amodei also explained the need for caution in how kids interac t with AI, noting that Anthropic does not allow users under 18 to interact with its chatbot. UNHEALTHY Is overrelianc e on technology causing students to miss the most important parts of growing up? This eye-opening piec e from The Atlantic shows how the attention economy and nonstop sc rolling are reshaping young people’s ability to focus, learn, and engage with the world around them. BREAKUP As governments and individuals alike grow wary of U.S. tech c ompany power, c ountries such as Franc e, India, and South Korea are pushing for “tec h sovereignty” by enc ouraging users to stay away from U.S. platforms, and promoting apps and social media websites developed within their own countries. In these locations, alternatives to Silicon Valley platforms are suddenly gaining real momentum. SAFETY A new report from Common Sense Media reveals that a strong majority of U.S. adults are now in favor of stric t age restrictions and privacy protections for social media and AI, driven by c oncerns that these platforms are "not meant for c hildren" and that c urrent age-verification tools are too easy to bypass. Meta Platforms and Google’s YouTube are the two remaining defendants in the case, which TikTok and Snap have settled. At the core of the Los Angeles case is a 20-year-old identified only by the initials “KGM,” whose lawsui t could determi ne how thousands of similar lawsuits against social media companies would play out. She and two other plaintiffs have been selected for bellwether trials — essentially test cases for both sides to see how their arguments play out before a jury. Mosseri said it’s important to differentiate between clinical addiction and what he called problemati c use. The plai nti ff’s lawyer, however, presented quotes directly from Mosseri in a podcast interview a few years ago where he said the opposite, but he clarified that he was probably using the term “too casually,” as people tend to do. Mosseri said he was not claiming to be a medical expert when questioned about hi s qualificati ons to comment on the legitimacy of social media addiction, but said someone “very close” to him has experienced seri ous cli ni cal addiction, which is why he said he was “being careful with my words.” Edi t Image He said he and his colleagues use the term “problematic use” to refer to “someone spending more ti me on Instagram than they feel good about, and that definitely happens.” It’s “not good for the company, over the long run, to make decisions that profit for us but are poor for people’s wellbeing,” Mosseri said. But this does not always work. A report last year, for instance, found that teen accounts researchers created were recommended age- inappropriate sexual content, including “graphic sexual descriptions, the use of cartoons to describe demeani ng sexual acts, and brief displays of nudity.” In addition, Instagram also recommended a “range of self-harm, self-injury, and body i mage content” on teen accounts that the report says “would be reasonably likely to result in adverse impacts for young people, i ncludi ng teenagers experi encing poor mental health, or self-harm and suicidal ideation and behaviors.” Meta called the report “misleading, dangerously speculati ve” and said it misrepresents its efforts on teen safety. LINK TO WEBSITE M illion Kids Insights: Please know that each one of us has to speak up if we see something suspicious and not just at the big game but in our neighborhoods. Even if we don't have proof. By identifying and reporting suspected human trafficking, you are doing your part to help law enforcement recover victims. This comes directly from the DHS website: Law enforcement can connect survivors of human trafficking to services such as medical and mental health care, shelters, job training, and legal assistance that restore their freedom and dignity. The public’s vigilance to report human trafficking is a vital line of defense against this heinous crime. What to Re port: WHO you saw. WHAT you saw. WHEN you saw it. WHERE it occurred. WHY it is suspicious. No tip is insignificant. If a situation gives you pause, trust your instincts. The presence or absence of any of the indicators is not necessarily proof of human trafficking. It is up to law enforcement to investigate suspected cases and make the determination. Factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, and/or religious affiliation are not indicators of suspicious behavior. Below is an aerial billboard flown in San Francisco over the Super Bowl weekend. Dad claims 16-year-old daughter took her own life after meeting a predator on Roblox, slams game platform beloved by kids Penelope Sokolowski was just 16 years old when she took her own life last February. Her father, Jason, believes her suicide was the culmination of a grooming process that began on Roblox, the game platform beloved by kids — with some 170,000 users under the age of 13, according to company data from 2023. “We kind of thought we were covering all the bases,” Jason told The Post, noting that his family had used a third-party app to monitor Penelope’s online activity. Jason alleges that his only child was contacted by a predator on Roblox who coerced her into cutting his name into her chest and sending videos of herself bloodied from self-harm — and who, ultimately, sent Penelope down a spiral that culminated in her death. LINK TO ARTICLE M illion Kids Insights: Matt Dolman’s firm, an attorney for a plaintiff, is aware of at least 119 lawsuits filed against Roblox since 2025. The cases, which span 34 states, include a shocking array of predatory behavior. What many parents don't understand about Roblox is that it is a game creation platform and hosts games which can be created by anyone including kids and teens, hobbyists, professionals, companies creating branded events and even predators. There are millions of individual games on Roblox and only a very small fraction are made by Roblox. Most importantly, there is no vetting or approval process before a game goes live. A creator can publish instantly and the content can be unsafe for children. Because anyone can create a game and publish it instantly, parents should know: • Quality varies between games. • Safety is not required. • Some games include unmoderated chat, private servers, or loopholes. • Predators can join games to contact kids (especially those with unmoderated chat). This is why parents should vet each individual game, not assume that “Roblox” as a whole is safe. They should also be checking their child's chats or messaging, know who they are interacting with and what games they are playing. Washington County schools implement Proxyware to detect predators and scammers online Washington County, Virginia, Public Schools are using a new system called Proxyware, CEO of the Virginia-based company Chris Olson tells News 5's Yannia Nordelo it helps detect online predators and scammers targeting students. We protect children by detecting and disrupting digital harms that reach them through social media websites and apps, said Olson. Olson says online danger doesn't always look obvious. LINK TO ARTICLE M illion Kids Insights: Your seven year old is using their school provided laptop for tutoring. The tutor is using a cartoon filter that glitches to reveal that the tutor is naked. A 10-year-old is groomed online for weeks by a predator through their school provided Chromebook until the parent discovers the messages. Both of these are real cases. School‑provided laptops are not inherently safe from scammers or predators. They can be safer than a personal device, but only if the school configures and monitors them well, and unfortunately many don’t or can't. The evidence shows that predators and exploitative networks absolutely reach kids through school devices, even when filters are in place. On many school devices, the protection and security blocks inappropriate websites. But predators don't usually use websites to contact kids. They will use email, chat features inside educational platforms, gaming platforms accessible through the browser, Discord‑like clones or lesser‑known messaging tools, social media sites that slip past filters and anonymous or encrypted apps that don’t require installation. Predators also exploit the fact that kids assume that the school laptop is safe. Law enforcement warns that predators do not stop because a child is “in school.” Kids may be targeted just as easily during school hours as they might be during the off school hours. The FBI also reports a major rise in sextortion and grooming attempts across platforms commonly used by students. School devices reduce some risks (malware, unsafe downloads) but do not protect against human predators, grooming, or sextortion. The safest approach for any parent is to treat school laptops exactly like any other internet‑connected device: • Regularly check browser history, email, and messaging tools • Keep the device in shared spaces at home and turned off at night • Ask your child who they talk to online and why • Set clear rules about communication with strangers • Teach them to report anything uncomfortable immediately Parents should also be asking the school what monitoring tools they use and whether those rules apply off‑campus. And finally, the school should be transparent with parents about third‑party apps, tutors, and communication channels being used. Students leading the way: Hampshire Regional pioneers first peer-led online safety program Who is teaching kids how to safely browse social media, video games and the internet? This past month at Hampshire Regional High School, it has been high schoolers who have taken the lead in mentoring middle schoolers, as the first school in the area to pioneer such a peer-led initiative. Starting in early January, HRHS students in grades 10 through 12 were trained to give an online safety lesson to seventh graders, aiming to give younger students the tools to recognize and respond to online harm. LINK TO ARTICLE M illion Kids Insights: These types of programs should be in every school. And it can't just be peer-to-peer but also at home between parent and child. Even grandparent and grandchild. Technology is not to be feared but to be understood. To know the way it can be used for good, but to also understand the risks and dangers. The following is taken from Opal's new book Digital Warfare : Our Kids on the Frontline - To be successful, the less of a technology information gap there needs to be between the generations. The better you can have discussions about how and where young people can become leaders for the next generation. Fortunately, most younger parents today grew up using technology, but the older people are still living in a world of Facebook and FreeCell. For young people to take you seriously, you have to have an understanding of the world they live in. This generation of young people cannot afford to be naïve and gullible and easy to influence. They will be interacting (online) with millions of people they have never met, and some of those people will want to access, groom, seduce and recruit our young people. Others will want to indoctrinate or radicalize them and tell them endless untruths to get them to engage in criminal or political activities that might be harmful. Being a parent today may be one of the greatest and toughest callings of all time. Every day, our team sees stories of innocent young people drawn into things their parents never imagined. It’s up to parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors to guide kids to become strong, grounded leaders with healthy values in a complex and fast- changing world. The project, which has been running since 2017, uploads files to file‑sharing networks (Peer2Peer/P2P) with names that resemble real child sexual abuse material. This is done to show how easy it is to find and share such content on these networks. For someone searching for abusive material on these networks, the files appear genuine because of their filenames. The actual content of the files only becomes visible after they are downloaded and played on the user’s device. In reality, these files contain videos and images with information from the police.
