Parents who say their children died because of social media harm stood outside the courthouse where
Meta CEO Mark Zuck erberg testified last week . PHOTO BY TOM EDWARDS, COURTESY OF HEAT INITIATIVE
Dear CRAIG,
The world’s ey es were on a California courtroom last W ednesday, when Meta CEO Mark
Zuc kerberg took the stand in a landmark lawsuit alleging (with overwhelming evidenc e) that
his c ompany ’s produc ts are intentionally designed to addict children.
Unsurprisingly, Zuc kerberg’s testimony was full of spin, evasions and outright lies. Most
notably, he lied about the link between social media use and poor mental health among
c hildren. In fact, even Meta’s own research has shown that inc reased time on Instagram
worsens anxiety, depression, body-image issues, and the risk of eating disorders,
especially for girls.
W hen asked what his message would be to parents who say their c hildren were harmed by
social media, Zuckerberg had no response. The reason is simple: he knows very well the
harm that Meta has c aused and is desperately trying to avoid admitting it.
I am so proud that members of our MAMA movement, including a Los Angeles Chapter
Leader, Julie Frumin, were outside the courtroom on W ednesday, demanding that
Zuc kerberg and his fellow Big Tec h leaders face accountability for how their produc ts have
exploited and manipulated our children.
The results of this trial will have nationwide implications for how soc ial media companies
target kids. But we’re not waiting for the courts to act. All over the c ountry , parents and
lawmakers are c ontinuing to push for policies that protect kids from addictive tec h.
Last Thursday , I joined New Jersey parents and advocates to testify at a hearing in
support of two essential pieces of state legislation: one that would implement the Kids Code
in New J ersey, and another that would require mental health warning labels on social
media platforms.
I was deeply moved by the parents who spoke at a press conferenc e before the hearing.
One of them, MAMA member Laura Miranda-Browne, spoke powerfully about how her
daughter was able to ac cess violent content via a school-issued tablet, inc luding horrify ing
portrayals of her favorite cartoon character, and how this disturbing experienc e inspired
Laura to take action:
“I am here today, to advocate for my children, and all the kids in New Jersey. Because
no child should end up addicted and exploited by online platforms, and in turn,
traumatized by violence, hate speech or pornographic images when they are just trying
to watch an episode of Hello Kitty.”
Right now, thanks to parents demanding justice and lawmakers responding with ac tion, Big
Tec h is having its Big Tobac co moment. The world is clearly seeing how these c ompanies
take advantage of our kids, putting children’s health at risk to boost their bottom lines. If we
keep up our fight, we c an ensure they are finally held to account.
Not backing down,
J ulie
Updates from MAMA HQ
W hen her c hild’s homework bec ame screen-based and exposed him to an AI chatbot, that
was the breaking point. In this powerful interview with CBC Radio, MAMA W estlake
Village, CA Chapter Leader Julie Frumin speaks out about the gamification of learning,
its impac t on kids’ attention, and why every child deserves a real, sc reen-free option at

Above: Advocates from MAMA, Design it For Us, and Parents Rise! came out in force in Trenton, NJ last week to support bills thatwould strengthen protections for children online and increase accountability for social media platforms. Below, Dr. Carol Pak-Teng
testified that “presentations to the emergency department by children have only exponentially grown with the development of morepredatory, addictive algorithms.”
Last week, MAMA Founder Julie Scelfo joined parent activists, Survivor Parent Er in
Popolo, Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin, and advocates from Design It For Us in
New Jersey to advoc ate for a three-bill legislative package, inc luding the New J ersey Kids
Code Act, designed to protec t c hildren from the harms of social media. Introduc ed by
Assemblywoman Andrea Katz , the legislation would require platforms to implement
strong, safety -by -design protections for minors and limit how c hildren’s personal data is
c ollected and used.
At an Assembly Scienc e, Tec hnology, and Innovation Committee hearing on the bills, mom
and psyc hologist Dr. Lauren Venuto provided testimony underscoring the importanc e of
establishing a c lear “duty of c are” to children for social media companies – requiring them
to c reate guardrails that protec t y oung users from harm – and urged lawmakers to shift
responsibility for protec ting c hildren from families to the companies building these
platforms. Other MAMA members, including NJ business owner Laur a Mir anda-Browne
and Dr. Carol Pak-Teng, a board-certified emergency physician, also provided powerful
testimony , and the pac kage advanced out of Committee that afternoon!
W e’re proud to see legislation
moving swiftly to strengthen
protections for c hildren’s online
privacy and require clear, visible
warnings about the risks
embedded in soc ial media
platforms.

SHOCKING Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri testified in the ongoing landmark soc ial media
addiction trial that using Instagram for 16 hours a day is not necessarily addic tion, instead
saying that it sounds like "problematic use.” After leaving the courthouse, Mosseri was met
by protestors, inc luding parents of children whose mental health has been harmed by his
c ompany ’s platform.
LIMITS On Monday , Attorney General Jay Jones announced his offic e will fully enforce
the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, a major step toward restoring digital guardrails
that would limit kids under 18 to one hour of social media use per day . This "safety by
design" vic tory aims to shift the burden of regulation from parents to platforms. The state
also filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit from NetChoice seeking to bloc k the polic y, taking a
firm stand against tech giants who prioritize addictive engagement over c hildren's mental
health.
ABUSE W est Virginia Attorney General John “JB” McCuskey filed a lawsuit against
Apple, alleging the c ompany ’s iCloud and iOS software fail to adequately c urb c hild sexual
abuse material (CSAM). CNBC notes that, unlike some other major tech c ompanies, Apple
does not use software that can automatically detect CSAM and report it to authorities.
LEGISLATION A bipartisan group of 40 state attorneys general wrote a letter to
Congressional leaders urging passage of the Senate-approved version of the Kids Online
Safety Act (KOSA). The AGs explain that the legislation is crucial, given that social media
c ompanies are “aware of the adverse mental health consequences imposed on underage
users” by their platforms but have not made the necessary changes to stop this crisis.
PARTING The National PTA has officially ended its long-standing partnership with Meta, a
move widely celebrated by child safety advocates and survivor families. After receiving
funding from Meta sinc e 2017, the organization announced it will not seek renewal of its
"PTA Connec ted" digital safety program for 2026, citing "heightened public scrutiny " and
the ongoing legal trials surrounding Meta’s impact on youth.
LEADERS Matthew P. Bergman and Laura Marquez-Garrett were honored in TIM E100
Health 2026 for leading the Social Media Victims Law Center in holding tec h companies
acc ountable for the mental health harms of social media and AI, inc luding cases where
c hildren were driven to suicide.
DEEPFAKES Ac cording to new, large-scale research by UNICEF, ECPAT and
INTERPOL through the Disrupting Harm project, at least 1.2 million c hildren ac ross 11
c ountries report they were victims of sexually explicit deepfakes in the past y ear.
GLOBAL The UN General Assembly has voted to create the first-ever sc ientific panel on
AI to assess global risks, opportunities, and societal impacts. The U.S. was one of only two
nations opposed to the move, say ing it could " stifle the development of c ross-c utting and
c utting-edge tec hnologies that will determine economic and strategic competition in the
twenty-first c entury .”
BRAIN SCIENCE On a recent episode of Steven Bartlett's The Diar y of A CEO podcast,
entitled Brain Rot Emergency : These Internal Documents Prove They’re Controlling You!,
social psy chologist Jonathan Haidt and Harvard physician Dr . Aditi Ner urkar go deep
on the neurobiological processes critical in childhood for well-being — and how tech
addiction (and espec ially short-form content) actively wire the brain for poor mental health
and distrac ted thinking. This episode is truly worth a listen.
