Subject: Opposition to Proposed Festival Center Project
Dear Mayor and City Council,
I am writing in strong opposition to the proposed Festival Center project due to unresolved public safety and evacuation concerns
in an area that has and continues to have a history of natural fire hazards, unlike other areas of Anaheim.
First and foremost, the proposed action impedes the health and safety of Anaheim residents. This area already suffers from limited
ingress and egress and is located within a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. Evacuation is currently a known problem and the
proposed project will only exacerbate existing issues, particularly evacuation under emergency conditions.
No other residents of Anaheim have had to flee their homes during wildfires only to be faced with gridlocked traffic as they try to
escape to safety. The proposed development will make this type situation even more precarious, increasing evacuation times during a
wildfire and potentially cause catastrophic loss of life. Approving a major new development without a proven, effective evacuation
plan places existing residents at increased risk. Public safety must be resolved before additional density is considered.
My daughter, grandchildren, and elderly mother also live in Anaheim Hills and had to flee their homes during the wildfires of 2017.
Evacuation was horrific and additional development of the proposed Festival Center project will only make matters worse. The City
is responsible and accountable first and foremost for the safety of its residents and, as such, so are each of you as our elected
representatives. It is unimaginable to me that individually and/or collectively you would take unnecessary action by approving the
proposed Festival Center project to endanger people’s lives.
I understand—traffic and development is a fact of life throughout the city and Anaheim Hills should not and is not exempt from this.
Our streets already experience major gridlock as commuters try to find alternatives to the 91 freeway. Each area of the city has
different nuances, however, and the wildfire dangers in Anaheim Hills are unique and should not be ignored or pushed aside to
accommodate this development.
For these reasons, I urge the City to deny approval of the proposed Festival Center until evacuation and emergency access issues are
fully and transparently addressed. The City Council has a moral and legal obligation to protect the life and safety of its residents.
