Dear Mayor and Council Member,
I am writing to you as a resident of Anaheim to ask you to please vote "No" on the proposed apartments at the Anahei m Hi lls
Festival Center. We just celebrated our 40th anniversary as original East Hills homeowners. And we have been through all of the
fire events since 1986 including the Canyon Fire 2 in 2017. I will never forget loading up my dogs and some personal belongings
in my daughter's car and the phone conversations we had as she sat in the Target parki ng lot watching the smoke and fi re
billowing above our home less than a half mile away (see attached photos). I remember li ke it was yesterday, my daughter
sharing with me how she drove on the sidewalks while blasting her horn in order to get to Target. She was franti c and was
pleading with me to walk down the street and out of the danger zone. In the meantime, my wife had no way of getting home.
TRAFFIC IN EVERY DIRECTION was at a total standstill.
The thought of adding hundreds of new apartments and about 1000+ more people to that exact same escape route
is terrifying to those of us who have actually been in that situation.
The reports for this project say that adding these cars will "only" add about 7 minutes to the evacuation ti me. But when you're
already stuck for three hours and the fire is moving toward you, 7 minutes is a lifetime. We don't have extra roads or "secret"
ways out of the Hills; we all end up on the same few lanes. Adding more people to a nei ghborhood that i s already a bottleneck
during a fire just feels like a tragedy waiting to happen. And the "Know Your Way" program wi ll not help! For people in a state of
panic, it's more like "Find Your Way"! It's also important to note that you did a very poor job of communicati ng what you tout as
being a program that is guaranteed to save lives. Did you mail letters? Did you put flyers in our utili ty bi lls? How exactly di d you
reach out to senior citizens and others who are not tech saavy?
I understand the city needs housing, but it shouldn't be built in a place where people are already struggling to get out safely.
Please don't make an existing danger even worse just for a new development. We are aski ng you to pri ori ti ze the li ves and
safety of the people who already live here and pay taxes here.
Finally, please find a report with a map outlining that Anaheim Hills is a huge FIRE RISK for the next 30-years!
Sincerely,
Charles and Donna Hill
