We are writing today to express our opposition to the Anaheim Hills Festival Development that is slated for the Festival Shopping Center
(Edwards Movie Theater site).
We have been residents of Anaheim Hills, specifically Deer Canyon since 2001, my husband 20 years before that having grown up surrounding
the Anaheim Hills Golf Course. We are incredibly fond of our “town” as Anaheim Hills really is a town; a small community that has a “small
town” feel.
Recently our beloved small town has changed into more of a metropolitan city despite the opposition from almost all residents. We will cite a
few examples of these changes:
1. Years ago while commuting to South County for work, I was unable to take the costly toll road home due to the thousands of Inland
Empire commuters blocking access to the 91 Westbound lanes.
2. Years later, IE commuters now choose to travel through our neighborhoods via Serrano Avenue and Santa Ana Road, often blocking
residents from access to their streets. In addition, it is increasingly difficult and time consuming to do simple errands such as school drop offs,
sports practice and grocery shopping during rush hour as our streets are jam packed with commuters who do not live in our neighborhoods.
3. Due to our time living in Anaheim Hills, we have been subject to multiple fire evacuations. The last big fire, in October of 2018, was an
evacuation nightmare. Schools were not evacuated in time putting our children as risk. I was in my child’s classroom at Canyon Rim
Elementary and saw flames charging down the hill, thankfully being putting out just before reaching the campus. THIS IS
UNACCEPTABLE. Students who were not able to be picked up by their parents in time were ushered onto busses for a 2 hour journey
down to Canyon High School; enduring a bus ride with no bathrooms, no access to needed medication in some cases. I’m sure you are aware
of the short distance between Canyon Rim and Canyon High. That trip took 2 HO URS. Why? Because evacuation routes off this hill are
limited and our resident numbers are already maxxed out. Too many people, too many cars, too much needless risk to residents. Our family
was evacuated from Serrano and Sunset Ridge…it was a 2 hour and 25 minute drive to reach the Orange Mall off Tustin Avenue. Our young
children were terrified as we were surrounded by black smoke, falling ash, racing firetrucks, siren, helicopters, and flames. We can only imagine
with fear what will happen during the next fire when there are thousands more people and cars added to the mix.
We are asking for the City to not approve this development. Please stop the needless destruction of our neighborhood and please do not
allow an increased safety risk and quality of life decline to this residents who already live here.
