Hello Mayor Aitken,
I hope this message finds you well.
With the outbreak of another war and rising food costs, I am very concerned about the extremely restrictive chicken ordinance in the city of
Anaheim, CA.
Suburban backyard homesteading is extremely important for families to be able to source their own food in times of trouble.
Economic downturn, cost of food skyrocketing, and disruption to supply chain logistics are here, with huge upticks around the corner in the entire
USA.
I am asking you and the Board of the city of Anaheim to consider the examples of other cities in Orange County that have more reasonable
chicken ordinances.
1 bird per 1800 square feet and 50 feet setbacks make it impossible for anyone to raise chickens in this city. Chickens are flock animals and
cannot live alone - there need to be at least 2. A family needs 5 to 6 hens to get an adequate amount of eggs per week. And very few people have
a distance of 50 feet between them and their neighbors in the backyard.
The city of Buena Park, in 2024, listened to resident requests and created a very reasonable chicken ordinance for its families. Yorba Linda,
Fullerton, Brea, Costa Mesa... these cities all have very fair and reasonable chicken ordinances.
Please consider changing the chicken ordnance for the city very soon, as we are in an economic cycle that predicts economic depression and
shortages now and over the very near future.
Thank you very much,
Julie Shin
