RE: Support for Agenda Item 28: Funding Update on The Anaheim Contigo
Program And Consider Establishing An Immigration Legal Defense Component
Dear Mayor Aitken,
I am writing to express my strong support for tonight’s Agenda Item 28 on providing
additional funding for Anaheim Contigo and the establishment of an immigration legal
defense component for community members facing financial and legal impacts as a
result of the federal governments immigration actions.
The City of Anaheim is one of our state’s most proactive cities in taking on the federal
government and protecting its residents. Anaheim Contigo has already proven to be a
crucial lifeline for over 300 families in the City, people who would otherwise have faced
the unconscionable decision of either eating less so their children would be able to eat
enough, or letting bills lapse in the hopes that they can cover other expenses . The
federal government’s targeting of community members who have been upstanding
citizens and neighbors, instead of their stated goal of deporting criminal actors, has put
us all on edge.
The establishment of a legal defense component will provide legal assistance to those
who either are facing deportation or equip them with the tools and knowledge to protect
themselves and their loved ones. As a former federal prosecutor, I know that the right to
counsel is a crucial pillar of not just our legal system, but also our Constitutional
foundation. Representation in court can mean the difference between an unjust
deportation and keeping our upstanding neighbors with their families .
I want to thank you for your consideration of this letter. If there are any questions,
please do not hesitate to reach out to me at Senator.Umberg@senate.ca.gov or (961)
651-4034.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Umberg
