RE:
Agenda Item #28
Good
afternoon Mayor and City Councilmembers,
My
name is Allison Vo and I am a resident of District 3. I am writing to express my
strong support
for the establishment of an immigration legal
defense fund to support Anaheim residents. In order to ensure timely access to thorough legal representation, I urge you to
allocate
at least
$100,000 for this vital initiative.
Access
to legal counsel for our immigrant and refugee residents ensures equal access to justi ce. It provi des a cri ti cal lifeline against
federal immigration enforcement’s aggressive tactics and overreach. Current federal policies and actions have signaled their
intent
to arrest, imprison, and disappear as many immigrants and refugees as possible. With the “One Big Beautiful Bill" inflating the
DHS budget and the Supreme Court legitimizing racial profiling, our community is livi ng in a reali ty where fear, uncertainty, and
state violence permeate daily life.
An
immigration legal defense fund is a crucial safeguard for the constitutional right to due process, especially during a poli ti cal
moment where the human rights of immigrants and refugees are being systematically challenged.
I
urge this council to take the following actions:
Allocate a
minimum
of $100,000 to the immigration legal defense fund
Partner with trusted community based organizations and legal services
providers through a public RFP process to ensure effective and timely
delivery of services
Declare a state of emergency
to unlock additional funding and re-allocate resources from public events to support the safety and wellbeing of residents
facing the combined pressures of immigration enforcement, the high cost of livi ng, and unaffordable rent
Allocate an additional $250,000 to Anaheim Contigo
to increase direct financial support for our residents facing hardship
Thank
you for your time and commitment to the safety of all Anaheim residents.
Sincerely,
Allison
