97-194RESOLUTION NO. 97R 194 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM ESTABLISHING THE BOUNDARIES OF THE ANAHEIM COLONY HISTORIC DISTRICT. WHEREAS, in the 1850's, German immigrants originally settled that portion of California then commonly known as the "Anaheim Colony" which grew to become, over time, the City of Anaheim (the "City and WHEREAS, the original Anaheim Colony encompassed approximately 2.127 acres bounded by North, East, South and West Streets; and WHEREAS, in order to build community pride, provide a tangible link to the City's past and to promote the preservation of unique resources, the City Council desires to designate and give an honorary name to that portion of the City known as the original Anaheim Colony; and WHEREAS, as a condition to the City's receipt of Community Development Block Grant funds, the City was required to conduct a survey of structures and buildings or collections of structures and buildings deemed to be potentially important to the history, architecture or culture of certain areas of the City, including the original Anaheim Colony (the "Survey and WHEREAS, the City was required and did forward the Survey to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Office of State Historic Preservation; and WHEREAS, the Survey contains approximately one thousand five hundred (1,500) structures and buildings; and WHEREAS, the City has subsequently updated the Survey and compiled a list of approximately one thousand one hundred (1,100) structures and buildings within the boundaries of the original Anaheim Colony which may be potentially important to the history, architecture and/or culture of the City (the "List of Qualified Historical Buildings and WHEREAS, a copy of the List of Qualified Historical Buildings is on file as a public record with the City Clerk; and WHEREAS, the City has participated in the preservation of certain homes in the original Anaheim Colony which appear on the List of Qualified Historical Buildings through the acquisition, rehabilitation and disposition of such homes; and WHEREAS, several structures and districts within the original Anaheim Colony appear on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Carnegie Library, the Kraemer Building, the Melrose /Kroeger District and the Melrose Backs Neighborhood; and WHEREAS, designating the original Anaheim Colony an historic district would uniquely identify that portion of the City and encourage the preservation and rehabilitation of historic and unique resources in the original Anaheim Colony; and WHEREAS, designating the original Anaheim Colony an historic district would protect investment in historic and unique resources, increase property values and encourage neighborhood stabilization in the original Anaheim Colony. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Designation of Anaheim Colony Historic District. That portion of the City of Anaheim, California (i) bounded by North, East, South and West Streets and (ii) depicted on the "Map of the Anaheim Colony Historic District" which is attached hereto as Exhibit A, is hereby designated and named the "Anaheim Colony Historic District." Section 2. Adoption of List of Qualified Historical Buildings. The List of Qualified Historical Buildings is hereby adopted by the City. THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION IS PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM THIS 21st DAY OF October 1997.
