The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to
order by Chair Larsen at 6:30 p.m.
STAFF PRESENT
Sjany Larson -Cash, Recreation Services Manager
Beth Lapkowski, Senior Secretary
None.
Commissioner Deneau made a motion to approve the minutes for the
November 18, 2009 meeting; Commissioner Santoianni made a second
and the motion passed with one abstention.
4. D.T.C.C. ART GALLERY Chair Larsen reported that she emailed the Mayor about the budget for
SUBCOMMITTEE: gallery openings and asked for $2,000 for the year; Sjany confirmed that
she received direction to put $2,000 in the budget beginning the new
fiscal year July 1, 2010. Chair Larsen indicated the money would cover
approximately four receptions. Chair Larsen indicated that she contacted
the Epicurean School to see if they would be willing to donate food for the
opening on February 10 which is entitled "Flora, Fauna, Abstract." She
also reported the next subcommittee meeting will be January 29.
Commissioner Castillo asked if any thought had been put into the idea of
having a full community gallery; Commissioner Deneau said that part of
the art facilities subcommittee's goal is to find space for a gallery.
5. ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE
Commissioner Santoianni reported that they have the framework and
outline of their presentation prepared, that will include a market analysis.
They will present their inventory of current venues in the city as well as
venues that have ceased operating. Commissioner Deneau added that
they also looked at the Cultural Plan and used its recommendations so
the report will be based on that. Commissioner Santoianni said the
project was getting so large that they would like to present a power point
to City Council and make suggestions to hire a professional to expand it.
He also indicated he had some contacts who have offered their services
at a large discount to help make it financially feasible. Sjany suggested
sending the power point to City Council separately with a staff report, and
the Commissioners could address them during the public comments
portion of a council meeting.

AGENDA ACTION TAKEN
6. INFORMATION ITEMS:
A. Commissioner Castillo: Commissioner Castillo asked about the Commission's website and
whether it had to be linked through the City website; Sjany offered to
meet with her to discuss it more in depth, but she indicated that this
commission is the only one with a website and would welcome input on
ways to improve it. Commissioner Maya asked about Twitter and
Facebook, and Sjany said the City doesn't want a lot of individual sites
developed, but they will post information and pictures of events to the
City's Facebook when requested. Commissioner Maya suggested using
a room at the Downtown Community Center as a Community Gallery, but
Sjany indicated that the facility is scheduled continually. Commissioner
Castillo mentioned that CIM might be willing to have some of their vacant
space used for displaying art. Commissioner Maya suggested that
Commissioner Castillo would be a good addition to the Art Gallery
Subcommittee, and Sjany reminded the Commission that each
subcommittee can only have three members so there is not a quorum,
and suggested they discuss that further next month when all members of
the subcommittee are present.
B. Commissioner Deneau: Commissioner Deneau reported that the opera season opens next week
in Long Beach with a comedic crescendo about the bureaucracy officers
encountered trying to enlist in World War I.
C. Commissioner Galanis: Absent.
D. Commissioner Jabbar: Commissioner Jabbar left the meeting early.

commission should meet with Carmen Smith, who is in charge of Cultural
Diversity for Disneyland. She also noted that the new exhibit at the
Muzeo started with the State of the Blues at the Carnegie Library and the
Frog exhibit is coming to the Muzeo. She also indicated that the
Downtown Anaheim Association has one of the Tree House displays on
the Promenade working and the others will be up and running soon.
F. Vice -Chair Maya: Vice -Chair Maya reported that the State of the Blues show was
