Center St., Anaheim, CA6:30 p.m. COMMISSIONERS PRESENTSTAFF PRESENT Alone Larsen, ChairCathy Glasgow,CommunityServicesSuperintendent Chris Maya, Vice-Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Erin Benedict Kelly Castillo Andrew Deneau Alkamalee Jabbar Konstantinos Roditis A G E N D AA C T I O N T A K E N 1.CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair Larsen at 6:40p.m. 1.UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION:None. 2.CORRESPONDENCE: Anaheim Art Association newsletter and notice from the Kennedy High School Center for the Performing Arts for the upcoming “In My Life,a Beetles Tribute” September 9-24, 2011. 3.APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Vice-Chair Maya made a motion to approve the minutes for the August 18, 2011 meeting;Commissioner Roditis made a second and the motion passed. 4.GALLERIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Chair Larsen reported that she will be sending out invitations to various artists to encourage their application to exhibit at the Center Gallery. CommissionerBenedict reported that she is preparing the next Center Gallery Exhibit invitations and will be sending them to staff soon.Vice-Chair Maya reported that Peter Perez will be exhibiting at the Promenade Gallery from October 8 through November 2, 2011. The exhibit will be themed alters for Anaheim historic figures and is involving local High School students. Vice- Chair Maya also gave an update that David Kooi has begun work on the display for the Center Gallery. 5.EVENTS SUB-COMMITTTEE: Chair Larsen reported that the upcoming Art Crawl Experience (ACE) event will be held on November 12, 2011. For this ACE, the Center Gallery will be hosting an unstaffed ‘Open House’ event with cookies or light dessert only.The Benedict Exhibit Artist’sReception will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011, starting at 7:00 p.m.with the formal program at approximately 7:30 p.m. Commissioner Benedict and Vice-Chair Maya both reportedthat they will not be able to assist with the next ACE event.Chair Larsenwill assist with the event artist set-up and Commissioner Roditiswill assist with event volunteers. Vice- Chair Maya reported that an Oktoberfestevent will be held on the Promenade on October 8, 2011,sponsored by Anaheim Brewery. The event will feature a 17 piece Community band and polka classes. 6.ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Commissioner Deneau reported that the revisedArt Facilities report is still a ‘work in progress’ and is pending input from Community Services Director Terry Lowe. 7.ARTIC REVIEW COMMITTEE: Chair Larsen reported that theReview Committee has narrowed the field to 10 finalists who will be making their presentations on September 29 and 30, 2011. Shewill share the submissions with the Commission at the next meeting. 8.PARK MURAL PROJECT GUIDELINES: Community Services Superintendent Cathy Glasgow discussed that the Park Mural Project Guidelines proposed at last month’s meeting fell outside the Commission’s scope of the duties as outlined in Ordinance No. 5892. The Guidelines that have been developed are workable and interested groups will be directed to the specific park or facility manager, who would present the proposal to Community Services Director Terry Lowe. E.Chair Larsen:Chair Larsencommented on an article in the Los Angeles Times regarding artist Alex Schaeffer and his painting of the economic havoc caused by the banking industry. F.Vice-ChairMaya:Vice-Chair Maya requested that the next Commission meeting be held at Founders’Park and that future meeting locations be rotated throughout the City. G.Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis had no additional items. H.Staff:Heritage Services Jane Newell reported that the Anaheim Historical Society’s kickoff event, “A Citrus Celebration,” on Saturday, September 24:2:00-3:00p.m.Open House with tours of the Mother Colony and Woelke-Stoffel Houses;3:00-3:30p.m.Ice Cream Social with orange soda floats and fresh squeezed lemonade;3:30-4:30p.m.Presentation on Anaheim’s citrus industry by Jane Newell, Kevin Kidney and Chris Bennett of The Lab.Cathy Glasgow distributed THE current Commission roster, the final specifications for the Center Gallery exterior building sign,and a flyer for the City’s September 11: Service and Remembrance activities. 10.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday,October 20, 2011,at 6:30 p.m. 11.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Larsen adjourned the meeting at 7:25p.m.
