Center St., Anaheim, CA COMMISSIONERS PRESENTSTAFF PRESENT Alone Larsen, ChairCathy Glasgow,CommunityServicesSuperintendent Chris Maya, Vice-Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Kelly Castillo Andrew Deneau Alkamalee Jabbar Konstantinos Roditis ABSENT Erin Benedict (Excused) A G E N D AA C T I O N T A K E N 1.CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair Larsen at 6:37p.m. 2.UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION:None. 3.CORRESPONDENCE: Anaheim Art Association–November 2011newsletter and invitations to each board member from the West Anaheim Neighborhood District’s Community Participation Committee to the West Anaheim Holiday Magic Christmas Tree Lighting at Twila Reid Park at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2011. 4.APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Vice-Chair Maya made a motion to approve the minutes for the September 15, 2011 meeting; Commissioner Deneaumade a second and the motion passed. 5.GALLERIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Chair Larsen reported that she has been reviewing the work of various artists to encourage their application to exhibit at the Center Gallery. Chair Larsen also reported that John Santoianni will be contacting the Chair of the Fullerton College Art Department to encourage a combined student show at the Center Gallery. 6.EVENTS SUB-COMMITTTEE: No report. 7.ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: No report. 8.ARTIC REVIEW COMMITTEE: Chair Larsen reported that theReview Committee has selected Mikyoung Kim as the project artist and shared the artist’s proposal which featured lenticular art. 9.INFORMATION ITEMS: A.Commissioner Benedict:Commission Benedictwas absent. B.Commissioner Castillo:Commissioner Castillo reported that the ArtCrawl Experience (ACE) event scheduled for Saturday November 12, 2011 was postponed to Saturday, November 19, 2011,due to rain.The Commission discussed the need to develop an inclement weather policy. Commissioner Maya recommended the creation of a Center Gallery flyer that would help to promote the gallery and help direct interested artiststo submit an exhibition application. Commissioner Deneaurecommended that the Commissioners review the article as LA is in the process of redefining art murals and are drafting a new ordinance.Community Services Superintendent Cathy Glasgowoffered to email the Commissioners the link to theonline article. D.Commissioner Jabbar:Commissioner Jabbarreported that he will be the Master of Ceremonies for the West Anaheim Holiday Magic Christmas Tree Lighting at Twila Reid Park at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2011, andencouraged the Commissioners to attend. E.Chair Larsen:Chair Larsenreported on the Anaheim Arts Council (AAC) ‘Art In Public Places’ awards which were announced at the November AAC meeting. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Harbor Lofts (by Anaheim Ice) for Peter Shire’s ‘Wind Dynamics in Art’ mobile sculptures and Founders’ Park for ‘The Passage of Time in Art’ sundial. The prestigious Julie Mayer Award went to Colony Park for the water-scape and historical landscaping with the ‘Anaheim Aquaculture in Art.’ Chair Larsen also reported that in part thanks to a letter of recommendation submitted by the Commission in May 2011, the City received California Preservation Foundation 2011 Preservation Design Awardsfor the Five Points Commercial Building and the Carnegie Library/MUZEO/CIM project. F.Vice-ChairMaya:Vice-Chair Maya reported on the upcoming ‘Holiday Art Sale’ at the home of Zoe Ann Tackis, 751 N. Zion in Anaheim from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, November 18, 2011,and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2011. G.Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis reported on his attendance at the AAC Art in Public Places meeting and the Anaheim Veteran’s Day event.Commissioner Roditiswas pleased to see the City honoring its Veterans and that the event placed an emphasis on the memorial sculpture by Richard Turner who was present at the ceremony. H.Staff:Heritage Services Manager Jane Newell discussed the ‘Art In Public Places’ for the Founders’ Park ‘The Passage of Time in Art’ sundialand its limited display for the public due to fragile design. Janealso reported on the movement of the historic 1860’s wine press and 1880’s horse-pulled mail cart to the Founders’ Park carriage house for public display. The Anaheim Historical Society’s Victorian Christmas Open Housewill be held at Founders’ Park on December 3 and 10, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Cathy Glasgow distributed acurrent balance sheet for the Fiscal Year 2011/2012 funding for the Center Gallery, a scheduleof upcoming Recreation, Human, and Neighborhood Services Division special events, and a flyerand verbal invitation for the Nutcracker Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 3, 2011. 10.NEXT MEETING: Commissioner Roditis made a motion for the Commission to be dark in December and tocancel the December 15, 2011,meeting; Commissioner Castillomade a second and the motion passed. 11.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Larsen adjourned the meeting at 7:40p.m.
