Center St., Anaheim, CAThursday,January 19, 2012;6:30 p.m. COMMISSIONERS PRESENTSTAFF PRESENT Alone Larsen, ChairCathy Glasgow,CommunityServicesSuperintendent Chris Maya, Vice-Chair Erin Benedict (Unexcused Absence) Kelly Castillo Andrew Deneau Alkamalee Jabbar Konstantinos Roditis A G E N D AA C T I O N T A K EN 1.CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair Larsen at 6:36p.m. 2.UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION:None. 3.CORRESPONDENCE: Anaheim Art Association–December 2011newsletter and calendars of Anaheim Historic Homes complements of realtor Barbara Gonzalez. 4.APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Vice-Chair Maya made a motion to approve the minutes for the November17, 2011 meeting; Commissioner Jabbarmade a second and the motion passed. 5.GALLERIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Chair Larsen reported that the Opening Reception for “The Art of Robert Thome: Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Worldwide” will be held on Saturday,February 11, at 7:00 p.m.as a part of the Downtown Anaheim Arts District quarterly arts festival “Art Crawl Experience” (A.C.E). Chair Larsen also reported that exhibits are being lined up for the Center Gallery up to October 2012. The Commission discussed several possible Halloween-themedexhibits. Chair Larsen and several other Commissioners commented that they did not receive the requested email from staff with the link to the Los Angeles Times article “Urban Art: Helping L.A. Murals Rise Again.” Community Services Superintendent Cathy Glasgow apologized and stated that she will send it out to everyone again. 6.EVENTS SUB-COMMITTTEE: No report. 7.ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Commissioner Deneau presented and reviewed the revised Draft ‘Report on Cultural Facilities in the City of Anaheim.’He reported that thisis the culmination of fouryears of work by the Subcommittee and provided hard copies to the Commissioners for their review and comment. Vice-Chair Maya requested that Commissioner Deneau please also provide the Commission with talking points. 8.ARTIC REVIEW COMMITTEE: Chair Larsen requested that this agenda item be removed from futuremeeting agendas, as the review committee has been completed their selection process. 9.INFORMATION ITEMS: A.Commissioner Benedict:Commission Benedictwas absent. B.Commissioner Castillo:Commissioner Castillo reported that Danny Beck agreed to participate asan exhibitorat the Center Gallery. Danny Beck is an illustrator and currently in production ona children's book with whimsical illustrations of anthropomorphic creatures in medieval times. Commissioner Castillo recommended that a performerfrom the upcoming Pearson Park Amphitheatre season participate at the next A.C.E. with the Theatre staff hosting a booth nearby to sell show tickets and promote theseason. Cathy Glasgow stated that she will follow up with the Theatre staff. Minutes of the Meeting of January 19, 2012 Page 2 A G E N D AA C T I O N T A K E N C.Commissioner Deneau:Commissioner Deneau recommended that staff look into having the Long Beach State Steel Drum Band perform during the summer series at the Pearson Park Theatre. Cathy Glasgow stated that she will follow-up with the Theatre staff. Commissioner Deneaualso recommended that the Commission support a citywide photography contest, and Cathy suggested that the winners could be displayed in the Center Gallery.Commissioner Castillo suggested attracting young people to participate by having a ‘Hipstamatic’ photography contest. This is an iPhone “vintage” photography camera application thatincludes social networking features to facilitate submissionof photographs via the internet. D.Commissioner Jabbar:Commissioner Jabbarreported that he was the Master of Ceremonies for the West Anaheim Holiday Magic Christmas Tree Lighting at Twila Reid Park in December 2011, and that it was a very nice and well attended event. He also reported that West Anaheim Neighborhood District group is now getting ready for the annual Western BBQ in May 2012 -also at Twila Reid Park. E.Chair Larsen:Chair Larsenrecommended that the Center Gallery shows and A.C.E. events be listed on the citywebsite and ‘My Anaheim’ cell phone application calendars, and that it needs tobe a feature story in the Cathy Glasgow stated that she will follow up with citystaff. Anaheim Magazine. F.Vice-ChairMaya:Vice-Chair Maya reported that he and Chair Larsen recently met with Mayor Tait at the Mayor’srequest. The Mayor indicated his enthusiasm for the A.C.E. events, which he feelsgives visibility to the downtown area.Vice-Chair Maya reported that the Mayor supports a strong arts presence in Anaheim in order for it to continue to be a great city. The vice chair commented on ways the Mayor emphasized how this could be accomplished through a grass roots community-based effort not relying on city financing. There was also a discussion of cultural artcommunitysuccesses in the region. G.CommissionerRoditis: Commissioner Roditis discussed the “Rule of 9” in marketing and reminded his fellow Commissioners that it takes ninecontacts or impressions for someone to know you or a product exists. The Commissioners discussed how this applies to their efforts to promote cultural arts in Anaheim. H.Staff:Nothing further to report. 10.NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2012,at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Community Center, 250 E. Center Street, Anaheim. 11.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Larsen adjourned the meeting at 8:05p.m.
