Center St., Anaheim, CAThursday,March 15, 2012;6:30 p.m. COMMISSIONERS PRESENTSTAFF PRESENT Alone Larsen, ChairCathy Glasgow,CommunityServicesSuperintendent Chris Maya, Vice-Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Erin Benedict (Excused Absence) Kelly Castillo Andrew Deneau Alkamalee Jabbar (Absent) Kostantinos Roditis A G E N D AA C T I O N T A K E N 1.CALL TO ORDER: The meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission was called to order by Chair Larsen at 6:35 p.m. 2.UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Former Cultural and Heritage Commissioner John Santoianni greeted the Commission. 3.CORRESPONDENCE: None. 4.APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Vice-Chair Maya made a motion to approve the minutes for the February 16, 2012 meeting; Commissioner Castillo made a second and the motion passed. 5.GALLERIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Chair Larsen reported that the next Center Gallery exhibit will beartist Danny Beck’schildren’s illustrations of anthropomorphic medieval animals. She also noted that there is a scheduling gap for June toJuly.Commissioner Deneau suggested a collective exhibit featuring the Commissioners’ individual works; the Commission discussed this option for 2013. Commissioner Deneau also recommended working with the Fullerton College Art Department for a future student exhibit. 6.EVENTS SUB-COMMITTTEE: Vice-Chair Maya reported on the planningfor the upcoming Historic Home, Garden, and Brewery Tour being hosted by the Anaheim Neighborhood Association on May 26 and 27, 2012. Vice-Chair Maya also reported on the Historical Anaheim Antique Flea Market being held onMarch 25, 2012,on th Center Street Promenade. The flea market will continue every 4Sunday from8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chair Larsen reported on her recent visit to Horace Mann Elementary School located on La Palma Avenue in Anaheim. This visit was a follow-up to a presentation by Arti Aggarwalat the August 2011 Commission meeting. Ms. Aggarwal solicited the Commission’s supportforlocal school projects that bridge neighborhoods from the 1800’s to the present with public projects such as local sepia photographs and artifacts depicting historic neighborhoods displayed in the schools. Chair Larsen met with the school staff in supportof such a project and followed up with an email to Principal Eric Hallman. Chair Larsen also reported on the MUZEO’s TrashARTist Earth Day Expo beingheld on March 21, 2012. Both she and Vice-Chair Maya will be judges for the countywide student “trash art projects” which will be on display for the . TrashARTist Challenge 7.ART FACILITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: The Commission discussed the ‘Report on Cultural Facilities in the City of Anaheim’ and the desire to move it forward. Commissioner Deneau recommended that the Commissioners discuss it individually with City Council members. 8.INFORMATION ITEMS: A.Commissioner Benedict:Commission Benedictwas absent B.Commissioner Castillo:No report. C.Commissioner Deneau:Commissioner Deneau offered to bring a group of actors together for stage readings at an upcoming special event. E.Chair Larsen:Chair Larsen reported on the Anaheim Arts Council’s ‘Champion of the Arts’ contest which runs from now through April 30, 2012. At the last meeting, the Commission nominated Commissioner Castillo to represent them. Chair Larsen is leading the effort tosell ballots for $1.00 each. At the end of the fundraiser the Commission will be given 50% of the proceeds for the Center Gallery’s ACF fund. F.Vice-ChairMaya:Vice-Chair Maya reported on his visit to the G.O.A.L.S. facility with Dave Wilk to discuss their application for a new art grant to fund an ‘artist in residence’ program. G.Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis reported on his findingsregarding the “My Anaheim” application posting more cultural arts events. H.Staff:Heritage Services Manager Jane Newell reported on the upcoming Founders’ Park open house on April 17, 2012,from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Jane also reported that in May she will be participating in storytelling at the WAND Western Barbeque and the Children’s Art Festival. Community Services Superintendent Cathy Glasgow provided a copy of the Anaheim Arts Council grant application to the Commission. After a brief discussion regarding the process, Chair Larsen stated that she will submit the grant on behalf of the Commission for theCenter Gallery. Commissioner Deneau mentioned the ‘Living Treasure’ program in Santa Fe, New Mexico,and that it might be a worthy program for Anaheim to initiate. Jane Newell offered to research the program and report back to the Commission. 9NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 E. Center Street, Anaheim. 10.ADJOURNMENT: Chair Larsen adjourned the meeting at 7:52p.m.
