A RESOLUTION OF THE ANAHEIM CITY COUNCIL
EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE EXPLORATION OF A FORMAL
SISTER CITY RELATIONSIP WITH PUDONG, CHINA
WHEREAS, the Sister City Program was inaugurated by the President of the United
States in 1956 to establish and foster greater friendship and understanding between the people of
the United States and other nations through the medium of personal contact; and
WHEREAS, the City of Anaheim has continuously participated in the Sister City
program for the past 37 years with the formation of an official relationship with Mito, Japan in
1978; and
WHEREAS, the City of Anaheim entered into a second Sister City relationship in
1988 with the formation of formal agreement with Vitoria - Gasteiz, Spain; and
WHEREAS, the Anaheim City Council established the Anaheim Sister City
Commission (ASCC) in 2009 in order to manage the existing Sister City relationships, promote
cross cultural exchanges, cultivate potential economic development opportunities and
recommend program expansion when appropriate; and
WHEREAS, over the past few years, the ASCC has been actively seeking a new
Sister City relationship that would complement our existing relationships and also provide the
City with a new partner in order to explore cultural and business partnerships; and
WHEREAS, the ASCC has expressed its willingness and desire to explore a formal
relationship with Pudong, China to share ideas and encourage exchanges that will lead to a
lasting friendship between them; and
WHEREAS, it is anticipated that a Sister City relationship with Pudong, China will
provide opportunities for cultural, sports, educational, and business exchanges between the two
cities and help develop future programs through mutual cooperation and friendship; and
WHEREAS, the ASCC is committed to mutual support for organizing and
developing experiences, common activities, and future programs of the Sister City relationship to
better foster an environment of friendship and collaboration;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Anaheim City Council that the
Anaheim Sister City Commission proceed with exploring a formal Sister City relationship
between the City of Anaheim and Pudong, China;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, by the Anaheim City Council that a cordial
invitation is hereby extended to Pudong, China to explore a formal Sister City relationship that
will promote mutual understanding, cultural and student exchange, and economic development
between the City of Anaheim and Pudong, China.
THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION, is approved and adopted by the City Council
of the City of Anaheim on this 1 4th day of May , 2013
