COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairman Crawford and Commissioners Vadodaria, Brennan, Huitt, Lappin
and Navarro

STAFF PRESENT: Lynn Smith — Community Services Manager, Larry Pasco — Parks Manager,

CALL TO ORDER — Chairman Crawford called the meeting to order at 5:36 p.m.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE — Chairman Crawford led the Pledge of Allegiance.
INTRODUCTION OF VISITORS AND COMMUNICATIONS
A. Written Communication — None
B. Unscheduled Oral Communication from the Public — None.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES — Chairman Crawford presented the May 22, 2013 Minutes to the Commissioners for changes or
corrections. There being none, Chairman Crawford accepted the minutes as presented.
ACTIVITY REPORTS
A. Recreation and Human Services Activity Report — April /May — Lynn Smith presented the report. Lynn reported the Pearson
Park Amphitheatre season started. The Orange County Wind Symphony and the All American Boys Chorus kicked off the
season on June 15.
Wendy Solorio reported the annual Senior Health and Resource Fair was held on May 4 where 27 agencies were
showcased and approximately 300 seniors attended the event.
B. Recreation and Human Services Park Ranger Report — May — Lynn Smith presented the report.
Chairman Crawford questioned if more Park Rangers will be hired since the budget was increased for the new fiscal year.
Lynn Smith stated the FY 13/14 budget was approved, but more Park Rangers will not be hired. Additional funding was
received this fiscal year (FY12/13) and operating hours were expanded to 10:00 a.m.- Midnight and will not change in
FY13/14. Lynn stated funding was received in order to expand the operating hours of other facilities.
C. Parks Capital Protect Progress Report — Pamela Galera presented the report, provided updates, and answered questions
on the following projects:
• Ponderosa Park — Award contract for construction documents will go to City Council for approval on July 23.
• New Park at Park Circle — A community meeting was held on June 25. Input was received regarding park needs and
residents were asked to vote on a parking restriping plan.
D. Senior Citizen Sub - Committee Report — Commissioner Huitt reported the following:
• Information learned from a presentation by Dr. Cordula Dick - Muehlke at UCI on the difference between dementia and
Alzheimer's.
• City of Huntington Beach now provides free bus rides for senior citizens — including rides from a residence.

• Informational sheet with frequently asked questions that are asked at senior centers was approved by the Senior
Citizen Advisory Council (SCAC) Board. It will be emailed to senior center directors to have available for senior
citizens.
• SCAC now publishes an informational newsletter.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Chairman Nominations for FY2013/2014 —Chairman Crawford opened the nominations.
Commissioner Lappin made a motion to nominate Andrea Manes as the next Chairman of the Parks and Recreation
Commission. Commissioner Brennan seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner Huitt made a motion to nominate Mike Brennan as the next Vice Chairman of the Parks and Recreations
Commission. Commissioner Lappin seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS — Larry Pasco reported the new Commissioners have not been appointed and may be appointed at
the next City Council meeting on July 2.
Chairman Crawford thanked the Commission for the last eight years as part of the Parks and Recreation Commission and is
grateful for all of the information provided to the Commissioners.
Commissioner Vadodaria also thanked the Commission for the last eight years as part of the Parks and Recreation Commission
and is grateful for the resources available for future inquiries.
Larry Pasco reported funding for park tree trimming was approved in the amount of $300,000. This will allow trees at all City
parks to be trimmed.
Larry Pasco reported another KaBOOM! award was received to improve Modjeska Park in September.
Commissioner Huitt presented the idea of a future KaBOOM! project for the grass area in between the Downtown Anaheim
Community Center and the Downtown Anaheim Youth Center where exercise equipment can be installed for youth and senior
citizens to utilize. Lynn Smith stated the grass area is owned by Community Development. Larry Pasco stated staff will be
presented the idea for a possible project in the future.
