CALL TO ORDER: Chair Maya called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6:36 p.m. Chair Maya welcomed new Commissioner Rida Hamida and asked her to introduce herself. Chair Maya congratulated Gus Roditis on his reappointment. 2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: No report 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Mayor Pro Tem Kris Murray provided handouts to the Commissioners for for a citywide private fundraiser to dedicate a monument to Bruno and other police K9s. She reported that this is to show that the City and its residents are grateful for their bravery and sacrifice to protect our community. The monuments will be placed in the new Olive Hills and La Palma Dog Parks. She also mentioned that Anaheim City Council recently approved a $25,000 contribution to the Kash for K9s committee, through the Anaheim Community Foundation. However, the Hotel Industry offered to assume that responsibility, eliminating any need for the City to contribute, making this a purely community, grassroots effort. Mayor Pro Tem Murray asked the Commission if they would provide comments and feedback on the artist and sculptress Susan Bahary who gained national attention in 1994 for the canine sculpture Always Faithful that was unveiled at the Pentagon. She stated that she understood that this is short notice for this request; but asked for it to Chair Maya and the Commissioners agreed that they would be honored to research and discuss the request. Chair Maya asked Jan to place the item on agenda. 4. CORRESPONDENCE: Chair Maya noted that the SB 1432 and AB 1662 letter of support was signed by all of the Commissioners to be presented to City Council. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Medrano made a motion to approve the minutes for the June 19, 2014 meeting; Commissioner Roditis made a second and the motion passed with four (4) ayes and one (1) abstention. 6. OLD BUSINESS: i. SB 1432 and AB 1662 Letter of Support: Jan informed the Commissioners that the support letter went to City Council on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 and that staff will keep the Commissioners informed of any updates. ii. City Public Arts Projects: Chair Maya explained the concept of the Public Arts Project guidelines for appointing a liaison for art projects and he asked Jan Branich to keep this item on the agenda for further discussion. 7. NEW BUSINESS: i. Summer Art Workshop Proposal Commissioner Roditis reiterated the workshop proposal and provided opportunities that the Commission could participate in October; the Oktoberfest at the Oak Cultural and Heritage Commission July 17, 2014 Page 2 A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N Canyon Nature Center. Chair Maya asked to have this item remain on the agenda for further discussion. ii. ARTIC Article and Tour Follow-Up Chair Maya passed the ARTIC article around for everyone to read at their leisure. 8. GALLERIES SUB-COMMITTEE: Chair Maya noted since Vice Chair Pettigrew and Commissioner Rodriguez were not in attendance; this item remains on the agenda for next meeting. 9. ART FACILITIES SUB-COMMITTEE: Chair Maya stated that a recommendation was given to City Council for an Art Facility or Performing Arts Facility and no steps were taken to move forward with the recommendation; therefore Chair Maya made a motion to remove the Art Facilities Sub-Committee from the agenda; Commissioner Roditis seconded and the motion passed with four (4) ayes and one (1) abstention. 10. ARTIST IDENTIFICATION SUB-COMMITTEE: Chair Maya asked that this item remain on the agenda for next meeting. 11. INFORMATION ITEMS: A. Commissioner Hamida: Commissioner Hamida invited everyone to the EID Festival 2014 in Downtown ndrd Anaheim on Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. She stated that there will be free admission and parking, also games, rides, food, music and fun! B. Chair Maya: Chair Maya invited Commissioner Hamida to be a part of the Galleries Sub-Committee; she accepted the offer. Chair Maya asked if Jan could find out how to add Commissioner name to the Galleries Sub-Committee. Jan stated she will inform Janis Heckel and if there is a certain procedure in place Janis will let the Commission know. C. Commissioner Medrano: Commissioner Medrano stated that he would like to invite Norma Kurtz of Heritage Museum of Orange County/Smithsonian Institution of Santa Ana to give a presentation on Jan Branich stated that she will forward this information to Janis Heckel to contact Norma Kurtz. D. Commissioner Pettigrew: No report th Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis reported that Oktoberfest is on October 18 at the Oak E. Canyon Nature Center from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. He also asked if the Commission would like to participate by having a booth at the event. Commissioner Roditis stated that it could be face painting, game booth or any theme displaying the arts. Chair Maya asked Jan to find out if the Commission was allowed to use our money to sponsor a face painting booth at an event. Jan noted that she believes that it would need a contract and it would go through the ACF funds but she will research the request and place it on the agenda for next month. F. Commissioner Rodriguez: No report G. Commissioner Ruelas: Commissioner Ruelas reported that he toured Europe for 18 days with students of Anaheim High School. He stated that it took two years of fundraising to make this trip happen for the students and they represented the City of Anaheim very well. H. Staff: Jan Branich reported that Pearson Park Amphitheatre 2014 Summer Nights Under the Stars will have; thth The Happy Crowd, on Friday, July 18, Anthony the Magic, Friday, July 25 and Highway Men on th Saturday, July 26 starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2014, 12. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805 13. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Maya adjourned the meeting at 7:35 p.m.
