Sister City 2014/04/28 CITY OF ANAHEIM SISTER CITY COMMISSION MINUTES April 28, 2014 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Anthony Al-Jamie, James Dinwiddie, Lori Farrow, Jackie Filbeck, Laurie Leonard, Mark Lopez, Kyndell Paine, Pat Pina, Linda Newby COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Russell Lahodny, Ann Gallaugher, Debbie Juliani, John Nguyen, Brian Anna Piercy STAFF PRESENT: Erin Wahlen, GUESTS PRESENT: David Bracey Yuko Saito-Rodriguez Agenda Posting: A complete copy of the Anaheim Sister City Commission Agenda was posted at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Anaheim City Hall. Public Input: Vice Chair Paine explained that members of the public are invited to address the Anaheim Sister City Commission and will be called upon under Agenda Item No. VI. Public Comment. I.CALL TO ORDER The meeting of the Anaheim Sister City Commission (ASCC) was called to order at 4:10 p.m. by Vice Chair Kyndell Paine on Monday, April 28, 2014 at the th Floor, Anaheim, California.  II.APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION: Commissioner Pat Pina offered a Motion, seconded by Commissioner Linda Newby AND MOTION CARRIED (Vote: 9-0; Absent: Anna Piercy, Ann Gallaugher, Debbie Juliani, John Nguyen, and Russell Lahodny) that the Anaheim Sister City Commission does hereby approve the minutes from the ASCC meeting held on February 24, 2014 as presented. Anaheim Sister City Commission April 28, 2014 Page 2 MOTION: Commissioner Linda Newby offered a Motion, seconded by Commissioner Mark Lopez AND MOTION CARRIED (Vote: 8-0; Absent: Anna Piercy, Ann Gallaugher, Debbie Juliani, John Nguyen, , Russell Lahodny; Abstained: James Dinwiddie) that the Anaheim Sister City Commission does hereby approve the minutes from the ASCC meeting held on March 24, 2014 as presented.  III. Commissioner Leonard reported there had been Report since the previous month; therefore the balance remained at $18,687.26. MOTION: Commissioner James Dinwiddie offered a Motion, seconded by Commissioner Linda Newby AND MOTION CARRIED (Vote: 9-0; Absent: Anna Piercy, Ann Gallaugher, Debbie Juliani, John Nguyen, and Russell Lahodny) that the Anaheim Sister City Commission does hereby approve April 17, 2014. IV.AD HOC SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS Commissioner Dinwiddie stated he met with the Cultural and Government Exchange Ad Hoc Subcommittee just prior to this meeting. They are in the process of preparing a schedule for the Mito Inbound Student Exchange. The students and chaperones will be in Anaheim from July 25 to August 2. Some of the events being considered thus far are the circus, an Angels Baseball game, a day at Disneyland and a barbecue at the beach. Vice Chair Paine indicated there would be a recruitment effort for host families at the Anaheim Orange County Volunteer fair on Tuesday, April 29. Commissioners Lori Farrow and Jackie Filbeck will be representing the Sister City Commission at a booth. Erin Wahlen shared the booth will display a poster of each sister city including Pudong as a potential third sister city. They are also going to have a table top dis have Sister City Commission informational brochures and applications to host students this summer. They will also have artifacts of each City representing ties. The fair is from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Regarding the Sister City brochure, Erin mentioned that the back of the brochure has all of the Commissioners listed and because there have been some changes; the brochure they have is not up to date. She suggested the Commission consider Anaheim Sister City Commission April 28, 2014 Page 3 not listing the Commissioners so that it does not have to be updated so frequently. In its place they can talk about the budding relationship with Pudong. If possible, they may have Commissioner Lahodny prepare a draft for the Commission to review at the next meeting. V.SISTER CITIES INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE RECAP On Saturday, April 4, 2014, Commissioners Linda Newby and Anthony Al-Jamie attended the Sister Cities International Conference held at the Los Angeles City Hall. They stated it was a great event with about 110 people in attendance. The conference was sponsored by the city of Los Angeles. They had a lot of consul delegates from foreign sister cities including South Africa, Mexico and Japan. They also had representatives from the Japan External Trade Organization and the Japan Foundation who provides funding and grant opportunities. VI.PUBLIC COMMENT Yuko Saito-Rodriguez reported on behalf of the Sister City Association in Mito that they have decided to go with Design Concept No. 1 to honor Dr. Hataya for his 90th birthday. Yuko described the design concept like a strolling garden with no water feature. She also indicated however, that a decision had not been reached with respect to the design of the monument. Once a monument design is consideration. Erin Wahlen asked the Commissioners if they all had a name badge. Commissioners Dinwiddie and Leonard did not have theirs yet. Erin would be assisting in making arrangements to get them picked up. VII.COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Newby stated the West Anaheim Neighborhood Development Council (WAND) would be having their annual Western Barbecue on May 10 and the invitation says they want to do a special introduction of the Anaheim elected officials, appointed commissioners and City Department directors. Commissioner Newby asked if anyone from the Commission would be available to represent the Sister City Commission. It was decided that Chairman Nguyen would be asked to attend and represent the Anaheim Sister City Commission at the WAND BBQ. Commissioner Leonard stated last year the Sister City Commission had a table at the Taste of Anaheim. She further indicated that the Taste is on May 8 this year and asked if the Commission would be participating. It was decided that this year the participation would be substituted with the Volunteer Fair which may be a Anaheim Sister City Commission April 28, 2014 Page 4 better fit because there will be people there actively looking for opportunities to do some community-based work. VIII.ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 4:35 p.m. to Monday, May 19, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the Anaheim City Hall, 7th Floor, City
