Services Director Janis Heckel, Comm. Services Superintendent Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Eleanor Granflor, Senior Secretary AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6:30 p.m. and the new Community Services Director, Brent Dennis, was introduced. 2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. CORRESPONDENCE: Chair Pettigrew shared the Anaheim Arts Association Newsletter and passed it around to the Commission. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Adelekan requested that the August 18, 2016 meeting minutes include the details of her report on the Art In Public Places in Anaheim she visited. The amended minutes will be presented at the October Commission meeting. 6. NEW BUSINESS: Janis Heckel reported that a meeting has been scheduled with the Community Development Department to discuss a pilot project to install QR signs on Center Street Promenade public art. As a pilot project, staff would like to install 2 — 3 signs at a cost of $25 each to see if they are utilized. Brent Dennis questioned how many pieces of art there are on Center Street and Janis Heckel stated there are approximately 12 art pieces where QR code signs could be installed. 7. OLD BUSINESS: A. Arts Council Meetings: Commissioner Adelekan reported that she attended the first Anaheim Arts Council meeting of the year on September 8, 2016. Commissioner Adelekan stated that the highlight of the meeting was the performance of a very talented youth mariachi band, Los Sanchos. A member of Los Sanchos spoke on behalf of the band about youth in the arts. Commissioner Roditis questioned if the Arts Council discussed the possibility of youth joining the Anaheim Arts Council. Commissioner Adelekan stated that the main topic of the meeting was the need for funding, which is needed for scholarships and to update the Arts Council's website. Janis Heckel reported that the next Anaheim Arts Council will be on Thursday, October 6th Commissioner Roditis volunteered to attend the meeting. B. Public Art Projects: 1. ARTIC — Janis Heckel stated that an installation date for the Grand Staircase art is still pending. Janis Heckel has contacted the staff at ARTIC to request for the next Commission meeting to be held onsite so the Commission can view the video monitor and see the demo steps of the staircase art. Janis Heckel will notify the Commission if the meeting location is approved. 2. Ponderosa Community Center - Janis Heckel reported that the project just broke ground and the artist providing the public art component will attend a commission meeting to share the art components of the project next year. Cultural and Heritage Commission September 15, 2016 Page 2 C. Poet Laureate: Janis Heckel and Joe Purtell (from the Anaheim Public Library) are working on developing a Poet Laureate program. The information will be shared with the Commission in the near future. 8. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Pettigrew reported the opening reception for photographer Tom Lamb was well attended. Mr. Lamb is well known for his aerial photography. Chair Pettigrew stated that Tom Lamb is represented by an art gallery in Laguna Beach and often time these artists cannot have an exhibit outside of the gallery that represents them. Since the Center Gallery does not charge a commission for any works possibly sold through the exhibit, it may promote additional artists being interested in submitting a Center Gallery application. Commissioner Adelekan stated that Tom Lamb is known for his technique of taking pictures while in motion. Commissioner Filbeck questioned how many applications have been received and if any were submitted by young artists. Janis Heckel stated eight applications were received and we do not ask for age so it was unknown if any of the applicants were young. Janis Heckel encouraged the Commission to invite any artists to submit an application. Commissioner Adelekan questioned if the artist has to be from Anaheim. Chair Pettigrew stated anyone can apply. Commissioner Adelekan requested for the Commission to have input on the artists selected for the Center Gallery. Janis Heckel indicated that the Center Gallery sub -committee is responsible for reviewing and recommending the artists selected to exhibit. The selected artists are presented to the Commission for final approval. The 2017 artists were presented at last month's Commission meeting. 9. MURAL SUB -COMMITTEE: Commissioner Roditis stated that the first Mural Sub -Committee meeting will be held after the Commission meeting and a committee chair will be elected. 10. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Pettigrew reported a committee chair has not been selected for the sub -committee. Janis Heckel shared information featured by CPRS on the Burbank Art Utility Box Beautification Program. 11. INFORMATION ITEMS: A. Commissioner Adelekan: None. B. Commissioner Asad: None. C. Commissioner Filbeck: None. D. Vice Chair Hamida: Absent. E. Chair Pettigrew: Chair Pettigrew shared a video on mural art work displayed on buildings. F. Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis requested an update on social media and if Commissioners can publicize photos on behalf of the Commission. Janis Heckel stated each Department Head must approve anyone who is allowed to post on a City site and that only City staff can submit posts on City social media sites. Staff is working on being more robust on social media and encouraged the Commission to share any photos with staff to be posted. Janis Heckel shared that the Center Gallery Reception invitation was sent out electronically to several local galleries including the MUZEO, Muckenthaller and Brea Gallery. The physical invitations are available at the Center Gallery and community center locations. Commissioner Filbeck questioned if an Instagram account can be opened for the Center Gallery. Janis Heckel stated that the Community Services Department currently has only one part-time staff monitoring Cultural and Heritage Commission September 15, 2016 Page 3 social media sites and it would be challenging to add additional accounts for staff to manage. This will be discussed with staff to see if it is feasible to open an account. G. Commissioner Rodriquez: Absent. H. STAFF: Janis Heckel: Janis Heckel reported that the Fab Four Concert will be the final show of the Pearson Park Amphitheatre season and over 1,000 tickets have been sold. Chairman Pettigrew questioned the capacity of the theatre. Janis Heckel stated that there are 2,020 seats. Commissioner Asad questioned how the proceeds of the shows are allocated. Janis Heckel stated that the Fab Four concert usually breaks even and the Family Night Shows and Free Concerts are funded by a community fundraising campaign and the city budget that provides the staffing and facility expenses to keep shows low-cost or free. Jane Newell: Jane Newell reported that the Founders' Park capital bid project has been extended to September 22nd Jane Newell stated that the Woelke-Stoffel House construction for woodwork re -finishing and painting has been scheduled for September 26tH and work will be completed by October 14tH. Jane Newell reported that the Anaheim Historical Society contributes funding towards these projects and will be hosting an Ice Cream Social on October 15tH Commissioner Roditis questioned the status of the security system to be installed. Jane Newell stated that the security system is for the Mother Colony House. Staff is awaiting on the bids. Jane Newell shared informational flyers on Library News (Anaheim Public Library) and the Fest of Ales event where partial proceeds will benefit the Muzeo. 10.
