Services Superintendent Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Eleanor Granflor, Senior Secretary COMMISSIONERS ABSENT Rida Hamida, Vice Chair Raymond Asad AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Pettigrew called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6:30 p.m. 2. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: Janis Heckel introduced Kevin Clausen, Planner, John Woodhead, Director of the Community and Economic Development Department, and Jim Wilson of Thirtieth Street Architects. John Woodhead, Kevin Clausen, and Jim Wilson presented information and answered questions regarding the MUZEO Plaza Improvements. Improvements include new event space in front of the MUZEO at the corner of Broadway and Anaheim Boulevard, a MUZEO art piece by Chance O'Neil, window preservation of the Carnegie building, a welcome mat/walkway from the curb to the entrance of the Carnegie building that will include an etched quote on the concrete walkway, new outdoor furniture, outdoor open space "MUZEO Alley" in between the Carnegie building and the MUZEO gallery, a seating area under the MUZEO Trellis with walls that can be used to display art, and the addition of a shade structure in the Carnegie Plaza open space. The Commission discussed the proposed improvements and provided input for the project. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Israel Robles, a resident of Anaheim, shared information regarding a traveling exhibit offered by the Smithsonian Museum which he would like to be considered for the MUZEO. The exhibit consists of a series of six posters which describe the experience of migrant leaders from Mexico during the 1940-1950's. Jane Newell stated this exhibit may be too small for the MUZEO, but may be a good fit for next year's BIG READ at the library. Jane Newell will share the information with the Library Board. Commissioner Adelekan stated this information is a good idea to integrate cultural history. Janis Heckel stated the MUZEO is a private foundation and will forward the information to the MUZEO representatives for consideration. 4. CORRESPONDENCE: Chair Pettigrew shared the Anaheim Art Association January Newsletter with the Commission. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Commissioner Roditis made a motion to approve the November 17, 2016 meeting minutes; Commissioner Rodriguez seconded the motion. Motion passed. 6. NEW BUSINESS: A. Orange County Symphony Tickets: Janis Heckel shared ticket information regarding the three official cultural art organizations in Anaheim. The Chance Theater has a variety of subscriptions and there is a five -show package for approximately $115; the Anaheim Ballet does not have a subscription, but there are various shows throughout the season; and the Orange County Symphony has a subscription for a little over $100. The three organizations sell tickets at various levels. Commissioner Roditis made a Motion to make a recommendation to the City Council for the purchase of tickets to the three resident cultural organizations to be distributed by the City Council at their discretion, seconded by Commissioner Rodriguez. Motion passed. 7. OLD BUSINESS: A. Arts Council Meetings: Janis Heckel stated the Arts Council is working to include art workshops to be a part of their meetings which will include guest speakers to help increase meeting attendance. The next meeting will be on Thursday, February 2nd in the Council Chambers where the Opal Society will give a presentation. Commissioner Adelekan volunteered to attend the meeting. Cultural and Heritage Commission 01/19/2017 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN B. Public Art Projects: Janis Heckel shared photos of the art being installed on the grand staircase at ARTIC. C. Poet Laureate: Janis Heckel reported the recommendation for a poet laureate is currently under review and will be presented to the Commission sometime in the future. 8. GALLERIES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Pettigrew reported that artist Kate Cohen currently has the exhibit in the Center Gallery. Kate Cohen was able to tell a timeline story of how her art evolves from one piece to another at the Opening Reception. 9. MURALS SUB -COMMITTEE: None. 10. ART IN PUBLIC PLACES SUB -COMMITTEE: Chair Pettigrew shared information regarding art grants offered to local communities. Chair Pettigrew also shared billboard art information with the Commission where artists can paint different types of art on blank billboards. Commissioner Adelekan stated she would like clarification and requested for the following questions to be answered: • How many different cultures have been represented through the Cultural and Heritage Commission? • What is the diversity of artists and how many different mediums of art have been displayed through the Commission/Center Gallery? • Can the Commission review the Cultural and Heritage Commission policy to define the roles and responsibilities of the Commission? Chairman Pettigrew reminded the Commissioners that the Commission is an advisory group. 11. INFORMATION ITEMS: A. Commissioner Adelekan: Commissioner Adelekan stated that she saw art, culture and people for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Information was shared regarding a Martin Luther King service day project that she participated in where telephone calls were made to start conversations with over 500 people. The event involved all cultures. B. Commissioner Asad: Absent. C. Vice Chair Hamida: Absent. D. Chair Pettigrew: None. E. Commissioner Roditis: Commissioner Roditis informed the Commission that he will be attending the Anaheim Performing Arts Center Foundation meeting on February 15t" F. Commissioner Rodriquez: None. G. STAFF: Janis Heckel: Janis Heckel reported Commissioner Filbeck resigned from the Commission. Janis Heckel reported the season is booked for the Pearson Park Amphitheater. Janis Heckel also reported that staff is pursuing cultural groups to perform at future Center Gallery Openings. Jane Newell: Jane Newell shared information for the 2017 BIG READ, celebrating the Ray Bradbury classic, Fahrenheit 451, that will kick-off on January 28t". Jane Newell stated ticket sales for the annual Mystery Authors Luncheon began this month. Jane Newell stated that a list of various events that the Library hosts will be shared with the Commission. Jane Newell stated there was a good turnout for the Anaheim Historical Society meeting on January 18t" 10. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Pettigrew adjourned the meeting at 8:24 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
