Cultural and Heritage 2017/09/21MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center, Weingart Room — 250 Center Street, Anaheim, CA 92805 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Brian Chuchua, Vice Chair Juan Alvarez Mark Daniels Claire Pettibone COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Patricia Adelekan Julie Brunette AGENDA September 21, 2017 STAFF PRESENT: Brent Dennis, Director Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting of the Cultural and Heritage Commission to order at 6:33 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chair Hamida. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: George Gilliam introduced himself as a board member of the Anaheim Arts Council and the Executive Director of Creative Identity. Mr. Gilliam gave a brief summary on the Art in Public Places program and awards event that the Anaheim Arts Council will be hosting. 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 5. CORRESPONDENCE: None. 6. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the August 17, 2017 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Daniels made a motion to approve the August 17, 2017 meeting minutes, seconded by Vice Chair Chuchua. The motion was approved with four ayes and one abstention by Commissioner Alvarez; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 7. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: a) Arts Council Meetings: Vice Chair Chuchua reported that he attended the Anaheim Arts Council meeting and gave a brief summary. Commissioner Pettibone also stated she attended the Art in Public Places Sub -Committee meeting. A brief summary was given regarding an award contest for art publicly displayed in Anaheim. b) Public Art Projects: Chair Hamida reported the Ponderosa Park Family Resource Center art project will be completed in the near future. 8. SUB -COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Chair Hamida reported the Center Gallery recently held an Opening Reception for Hyun Ae Kang's exhibit "Windows in Heaven". The next exhibit will feature Ron Gabriel in November and December. b) Murals and Art in Public Places: Chair Hamida reported research is being conducted for a mural program proposal that would feature Anaheim artists. 1) Display of Public Art Policy: Commissioner Alvarez reported the sub -committee will be working on information on percent for the arts programs. c) Multi -Cultural Event: None. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Brent Dennis reported on a multi -cultural event that was held in Irvine, the Anaheim Accessibility Center, Poet Laureate, and Planning for Parks Survey. Jane Newell reported the Historical Society will be hosting an event at the Woelke-Stoffel House on September 23rd Chair Hamida reported on the World Refugee Day event held at Pearson Park Amphitheatre. 10. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:10 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Accessibility Center, 100 S. Atchison, Anaheim CA 92805.
