Atchison, Anaheim, CA 92805 October 19, 2017 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Brian Chuchua, Vice Chair Janis Heckel, Community Services Superintendent Patricia Adelekan Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Juan Alvarez Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Mark Daniels Claire Pettibone COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Julie Brunette AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Chuchua called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice Chair Chuchua. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: George Gilliam introduced himself, Executive Director of Creative Identity, and Program Director, Dr. Cynthia Smith. A presentation was given on the program and questions were answered. Creative Identity is a non-profit therapeutic music and arts program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Artwork completed by the clients were shared with the Commission. 5. CORRESPONDENCE: None. 6. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Vice Chair Chuchua presented the September 21, 2017 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Pettibone requested for a sentence to be replaced in section 7a to read "Commissioner Pettibone also stated she attended the Art in Public Places Sub -Committee meeting". Commissioner Daniels made a motion to approve the September 21, 2017 meeting minutes as amended, seconded by Commissioner Adelekan. The motion was approved as amended unanimously; Vice Chair Chuchua accepted the minutes. 7. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: a) Arts Council Meetings: Commissioner Alvarez stated that he and Commissioner Pettibone were serving on the Anaheim Arts Council, Art in Public Places Committee and are working on the presentation for the awards of the public art recognition program that will take place on November 2°d in the City Council Chamber. b) Public Art Projects: None. 8. NEW BUSINESS: a) Poet Laureate: Janis Heckel stated the Anaheim Poet Laureate position was approved by the City Council and the selection process would begin soon. 9. SUB -COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Vice Chair Chuchua shared information for the next Center Gallery Opening Reception showcasing the art of Ron Gabriel. The exhibit is titled "Study in Semi Realism" and the reception is Thursday, November 161h from 5-6:30 p.m. b) Murals and Art in Public Places: Commissioner Pettibone stated the committee continues to gather information that will be presented to the Commission at a later date. Cultural and Heritage Commission 10/19/2017 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN c) Multi -Cultural Event: Commissioner Adelekan provided information on `What is the difference between Culture and Heritage'. Commissioner Alvarez stated the committee will meet and put together a recommendation for an event and present information to the Commission by the end of next year. 10. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Vice Chair Chuchua stated a groundbreaking will be held on October 271h for the Veterans' Memorial Park in Irvine. Commissioner Alavarez reported the Day of the Dead/Dia de Los Muertos event hosted by the City will be held on November 3rd on the grass area next to the Downtown Anaheim Community Center. Commissioner Daniels stated the Anaheim Cemetery will host a Day of the Dead event on November 2°d Commissioner Adelekan stated the International Educator's Hall of Fame and Youth Awards Ceremony will be held on November 111h. 11. ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair Chuchua adjourned the meeting at 7:13 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
