INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: a) Joe Perez updated the Youth Commissioners on next month's presentations and requested input with regards to inviting representatives from the two major school districts serving Anaheim; Anaheim Elementary School District and Anaheim Union High School District. Youth Commissioners agreed that they would like to hear what the two districts are doing regarding extracurricular and non-academic activities provided by each. Brent Dennis, Community Services Director, addressed Youth Commissioners by expressing his gratitude for their commitment and level of maturity. Commissioner Flores addressed his concerns over the purpose of the Youth Commission and suggested having a general discussion. Prior to discussion, Joe Perez reminded commissioners that they serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council regarding children and youth in the community. Chair Sandoval added to the discussion that she liked the idea of forming sub -committees because they can focus their energy and ideas into one portion of a larger general youth services idea. Chair Sandoval recommend holding off on forming subcommittees until they conclude all presentations in order for all commissioners to get a better understanding and decide which subcommittee they would like to join. Commissioner Flores continued by suggesting less programming and focusing more on urban planning to better assist youth in having access to productive spaces. Commissioner Urrea suggested that as a youth commission they should focus on the City's priorities. Commissioner Galang said that he supports the idea of having a subcommittee and suggested sending representatives from the subcommittees to other commissions to better understand the issues going on and discuss those issues at the Youth Commission's upcoming meeting. Chair Sandoval added that she feels that the Youth Commission should focus on how residents can access the various programs and services the City has to offer. Commissioner Gomez suggested going into social media and creating an Instagram page to connect with youth and allow them to see the different resources the City has to offer. Commissioner Truong offered an alternative to age range subcommittees and asked commissioners to consider having subcommittee category themes such as outreach or connections through committees to better reach youth in the community. Commissioner Flores added that the commission could also assist the City by having constant communication with City Hall to communicate their ideas on outreach and marketing. Joe Perez updated the Youth Commission on the upcoming Day of the Dead Event scheduled for Friday, Nov. 3rd He noted that they expect to have 30+ alters from different elementary, junior high, and high schools represented and he encouraged commissioners to attend and invite their friends and family members. 9.
