Cultural & Heritage 2018/01/18MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center — 250 Center St., Anaheim, CA 92805 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Brian Chuchua, Vice Chair Patricia Adelekan Juan Alvarez Mark Daniels Claire Pettibone COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Julie Brunette AGENDA January 18, 2018 STAFF PRESENT: Brent Dennis, Director Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Anaheim Sporn, Community Services Superintendent Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:37 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chair Hamida. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. CORRESPONDENCE: None. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the November 16, 2017 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Daniels made a motion to approve the November 16, 2017 meeting minutes as amended, seconded by Vice Chair Chuchua. A discussion was held within the Commission regarding the process of the approval of a City Ordinance. The motion was approved with four votes in favor, one opposed from Commissioner Adelekan, and one abstention from Commissioner Alvarez; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 6. PREVIOUS BUSINESS: a) Public Art Projects: Brent Dennis invited the Commission to the Ponderosa Park Family Resource Center and Gymnasium Grand Opening on January 271h. SUB -COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Vice Chair Chuchua attended the Center Gallery opening reception on January 11 th for artist, Ron Gabriel's exhibit "Study in Semi Realism". Brent Dennis reported that the artist also created the music that was played at the event. b) Public Art Program 1) Letter of Support: Brent Dennis read the proposed letter to support a City Ordinance to the Commission and answered questions regarding possible edits and when this will be presented to the City Council. Commissioner Alvarez made a Motion to approve the Letter of Support for the City Ordinance, seconded by Commissioner Daniels. The motion was approved with five ayes and one abstention by Commissioner Adelekan; Chair Hamida accepted the motion. c) Multi -Cultural Event: Commissioner Alvarez made a motion for the Commission to recommend the Multi -Cultural Event Proposal as a proposed City Ordinance to the City Council, seconded by Chair Hamida. The motion was approved with five ayes and one opposed by Commissioner Adelekan. d) Poet Laureate: Commissioner Pettibone reported the Poet Laureate committee has received applications and they have been reviewed. The applicants will be interviewed on Febraury 15'. The Sub -Committee will present further information at the next Commission meeting. Cultural and Heritage Commission 01/18/18 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN e) Heritage: Commissioner Daniels made a proposal for certain City locations that no longer exist be chosen to have a plaque installed to recognize the history of the City. Jane Newell recommended for the Sub -Committee to meet at the Heritage Center to put together a recommendation for the location plaque program and to also put together a list of the historical sites. 8. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Commissioner Adelekan shared with the Commission a Chinese New Year event flyer for an event that will take place at Brookhurst Community Center on February 91h, and an article on Dr. Martin Luther King. Commissioner Adelekan reported she has chosen to step down from the Multi -Cultural Event Sub -Committee. 9. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:37 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
