RES-2018-049RESOLUTION NO. 2018- 0 4 9 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM ACKNOWLEDGING THE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES OF SENIOR ISOLATION AND LONELINESS AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND AFFIRMING THE CITY'S COMMITMENT TO ADDRESSING THIS IMPORTANT ISSUE. WHEREAS, the global population of people aged 60 and over is expected to grow from 600 million in 2000 to almost 2 billion in 2050; and WHEREAS, in the United States, the population of people aged 65 and over is expected to grow from 35 million in 2000 to 88.5 million by 2050, taking the total share of the 65 and over population from 12 percent to 20 percent of the total population; and WHEREAS, 21 percent of adults aged 65 and older do not drive, and more than half of these non -drivers do not leave home on a given day, in part because they lack transportation options; and WHEREAS, reduced mobility for older non -drivers leads to 15 percent fewer trips to the doctor, 59 percent fewer shopping trips and visits to restaurants, and 65 percent fewer trips for social, family and religious activities; and WHEREAS, in Anaheim, there are 48,097 seniors and 3,315 are living below the Federal poverty line; and WHEREAS, Anaheim has the highest senior population (Age 60+) and the most living in poverty in Orange County, according to statistics compiled by the County of Orange; and WHEREAS, although Anaheim has a long history of serving seniors through city programs, and through SeniorServ, we recognize that more must be done to address senior isolation and loneliness; and WHEREAS, as a City of Kindness, Anaheim is committed to improving the social bonds of our neighborhoods, and especially between older adults living alone and families and individuals; and WHEREAS, the World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a Global Network of Age -Friendly Cities and Communities to encourage and promote public policies to increase the number of cities and communities that support healthy ageing and thereby improve the health, well-being, satisfaction and quality of life for older Americans; and NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF ANAHEIM, hereby: 1. Affirms the City's commitment to addressing senior isolation and loneliness among older residents in our community and solving this problem by helping seniors keep connected with their neighbors, friends and community; 2. Pledges to introduce a new campaign to educate our residents on the issue of senior isolation and provide opportunities and tools to encourage residents to engage with seniors in their neighborhoods; 3. Commits to becoming a part of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Network of Age -Friendly Communities, which along with providing opportunities for financial grants to enhance services to seniors, will provide Anaheim with resources and access to information on best practices around the country.
