Anaheim Blvd., Anaheim, CA 92805 June 21, 2018 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Brian Chuchua, Vice Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Patricia Adelekan Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Juan Alvarez Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Mark Daniels Claire Pettibone COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Julie Brunette AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Chuchua called the meeting to order at 6:53 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Daniels. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: Jane Newell introduced Josh Spears, Acting Executive Director of the MUZEO. Josh Spears, Acting Executive Director of the MUZEO, gave the Commission a tour of the MUZEO and the "Ghost Stories & Fairy Tales" exhibit. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Vice Chair Chuchua presented the April 19, 2018 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Alvarez made a motion to approve the April 19, 2018 meeting minutes, seconded by Commissioner Daniels. The motion was approved with five votes in favor; Vice Chair Chuchua accepted the minutes. 6. SUB -COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported that Center Gallery applications are available on the City website and encouraged the Commissioners to invite artists that they know to apply for the 2019 calendar year. There is no set deadline, applications can be submitted on an ongoing basis. b) Public Art Program: Commissioner Alvarez reported that he received an invitation to attend the next round table meeting for Art in Public Places on June 27t" c) Multi -Cultural Event: Commissioner Alvarez reported there is a hold on the process of a multi -cultural event. Holly Unruh encouraged the sub -committee to find a non-profit organization or a group of organizations to sponsor the event. Commissioner Alvarez stated the sub -committee will invite multiple non-profit organizations to possibly collaborate and discuss the proposed event. d) Poet Laureate: Commissioner Pettibone introduced the new Poet Laureate, Grant Hier. Grant Hier gave a brief report of his involvement with art and culture as Poet Laureate. He has already connected with a few schools and has read to students, and attended two community sponsored events at City libraries. e) Heritage: Commissioner Daniels presented a draft recommendation for the City Council to adopt a Heritage Markers Program to be administered through the Heritage Services Program of the Community Services Department. Jane Newell encouraged the Commission to read through the draft recommendation and discuss the program at the next Commission meeting.
