Cultural & Heritage 2018/07/19MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center — 250 Center St., Anaheim, CA 92805 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Brian Chuchua, Vice Chair Juan Alvarez Julie Brunette Mark Daniels Claire Pettibone COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Patricia Adelekan AGENDA July 19, 2018 STAFF PRESENT: Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:29 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Chair Hamida. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the June 21, 2018 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Alvarez made a motion to approve the June 21, 2018 meeting minutes, seconded by Vice Chair Chuchua. Commissioner Pettibone requested to change item 6b to read "Public Art Program: Commissioner Alvarez reported that he received an invitation to attend the next round table meeting for the Art in Public Places on June 271h." The minutes were voted in favor unanimously with the edit as read, Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 6. SUB -COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported the Anaheim Arts Association is currently on exhibit at the Center Gallery. The next Center Gallery Opening will be on September 6th. The Commissioners were encouraged to invite artists to submit applications for the 2019 calendar year. b) Public Art Program: Commissioner Alvarez reported the invitation to attend the next round table meeting for Art in Public Places on June 27th was wrongly communicated and the correct meeting date is July 27th c) Multi -Cultural Event: Commissioner Alvarez reported the sub -committee is on hold. The sub -committee requested for staff to meet with them for future advisement. d) Poet Laureate: Commissioner Pettibone reported that Poet Laureate, Grant Hier, attended the last Commission meeting and gave a brief overview on the proposal provided to the Commission. Commissioner Pettibone made a motion to approve the proposed theme for the "Welcoming Day" event, seconded by Vice Chair Chuchua. The motion was voted in favor unanimously, Chair Hamida accepted the motion. e) Heritage: Commissioner Daniels presented the proposal for the Heritage Markers Program and gave a brief overview. Vice Chair Chuchua made a motion to approve the proposal, seconded by Commissioner Alvarez. The motion was voted in favor unanimously; Chair Hamida accepted the motion. 7. NEW BUSINESS: a) Selection of Chair: Commissioner Alvarez made a motion for Chair Hamida to continue as the Chair, seconded by Commissioner Daniels. The motion was voted in favor unanimously; Chair Hamida will remain Chair. Cultural and Heritage Commission 07/19/18 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN b) Selection of Chair: Chair Hamida made a motion for Vice Chair Chuchua to continue the Vice Chair, seconded by Commissioner Daniels. The motion was voted in favor unanimously; Vice Chair Chuchua will remain Vice Chair. 8. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Commissioner Daniels reported the Orange County Mariachi Festival will be performing at the Pearson Park Amphitheater in September. Vice Chair Chuchua recommended for the Multi -Cultural Event sub -committee to work with Poet Laureate, Grant Hier, on possible connections for the event. Commissioner Alvarez shared information regarding a mural that was painted on the wall of the City Church. Photos were shared of the mural that has been started on the corner of Citron and Broadway. Commissioner Brunette recommended for art to be painted for the disabled and elderly community and that poetry also be read to them. Holly Unruh reported the Rhythmo Mariachi Group will be performing on August 10th at the Pearson Amphitheater movie night. The movie "Coco' will be shown and the Mariachi Group will play a few songs at the movie night event to promote their event at Pearson Park in September. Jane Newell reported an Anaheim Union High School District Intern conducted four oral interviews with Japanese Americans that will be added to the collection. 9. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:18 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
