Cultural & Heritage 2018/09/20MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center — 250 Center St., Anaheim, CA 92805 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Brian Chuchua, Vice Chair Juan Alvarez Julie Brunette Mark Daniels Claire Pettibone COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Patricia Adelekan September 20, 2018 STAFF PRESENT: Jane Newell, Heritage Services Manager Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Daniels. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED COMMUNICATION: None. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the August 16, 2018 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Alvarez made a motion to approve the August 16, 2018 meeting minutes, seconded by Commissioner Daniels. The minutes were voted in favor unanimously; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 6. SUB -COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Chair Hamida reported the Opening Reception for exhibit "Pushpa Sahu. Colors and Patterns: Capturing a Fleeting Magic" was on September 61h. Holly Unruh gave a brief overview of the type of art displayed in the exhibit. The Commissioners were encouraged to invite artists to submit applications for the 2019 calendar year. b) Public Art Program: None. c) Multi -Cultural Event: Holly Unruh reported the recommendation is currently being finalized and will be provided to Chair Hamida for signature before it is submitted to the City Council. d) Poet Laureate: Commissioner Pettibone reported Grant Hier's welcoming event will be held during World Refugee month. Commissioner Pettibone provided an update on possible funding for the Poet Laureate program. The Anaheim Arts Council is interested in providing funds for this purpose and intends to determine if those funds can be made available to the Poet Laureate through the Anaheim Community Foundation. There is a "Monster Verse in the Gallery" poetry event on September 291h at the MUZEO. e) Heritage: Commissioner Daniels reported the recommendation for the Heritage Markers Program is currently being finalized and will be provided to Chair Hamida for signature before it is submitted to the City Council. 7. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Commissioner Brunette questioned the definition of Culture and Heritage with the Commission. A discussion was held about the different definitions and ideas. Cultural and Heritage Commission 09/20/18 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN Commissioner Alvarez reported the Ribbon Cutting event at the City Church was a great event. Commissioner Pettibone reported the Prayer Breakfast event will be on October 171h at the Anaheim Convention Center. Jane Newell gave an update on the Mother Colony House project that is almost complete. The first tour will be on October 25th and the first Open House will be on November 3,d. Jane also reported a grant was awarded for the Japanese American Heritage Project and an exhibit will be showcased at the MUZEO in August 2019. Holly Unruh reported the OC Mariachi Festival will be held on September 29th at the Pearson Park Amphitheatre. The Fall Festival will be held on October 27tH 8.
