Senior Citizen 2018/03/15MINUTES SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 E. Center Street, Anaheim, California March 15, 2018 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Harold Ramey, Chair Joe Perez, Community Services Superintendent Gary Kellison, Vice -Chair Wendy Solorio, Community Services Supervisor Emma Burns Beth Lapkowski, Administrative Assistant Michael Collins Patricia Pina GUESTS: Tim Schindler Brent Dennis, Community Services Director Paul Vicknair Sjany Larson -Cash, Community Services Manager AGENDA ACTION TAKEN 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Ramey called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Vice -Chair Kellison led the Commission in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. 3. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Ramey asked for a motion to approve the minutes of November 16, 2017. Commissioner Vicknair made a motion to approve the minutes, seconded by Vice -Chair Kellison; motion passed. Chair Ramey then asked if there were any comments or corrections for the minutes of January 18, 2018. Hearing none, he asked for a motion to approve the minutes. Commissioner Pina made a motion to approve the minutes, seconded by Commissioner Vicknair; motion passed. 4. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: A. Council Member Denise Barnes spoke thanked the Commissioners for their service and spoke about an age -friendly AARP program she is working on with Mayor Tait. She also spoke about homeless veterans in the city and stated that she is looking for input from the Commissioners. B. Carol Kepler addressed the Commission and asked about the two different brochures she receives from the City. She would like to see more information on seniors listed in the brochure. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 6. NEW BUSINESS: A. Presentation — Alzheimer's Orange County: Christine Chow from Alzheimer's Orange County presented a Power Point and shared information about the Orange County Strategic Plan for Aging, and answered questions by the Commission. B. Parks Plan Steering Committee Appointment: Chair Ramey appointed Commissioner Schindler as the Senior Commission representative for the steering committee and he accepted. C. Lincoln Street Widening Prosect: Commissioner Vicknair apologized for not being prepared to report on this item; he has had a flood at his home but will bring information to the next meeting. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: A. Brent Dennis announced that he is leaving the City of Anaheim for a leadership opportunity in Tucson, Arizona; his last day will be March 30. He reminded the Commissioners that the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, March 21, at the City National Grove and stated that he hopes they all can attend. Senior Citizen Commission 3/15/18 Page 2 AGENDA ACTION TAKEN B. Commissioner Pina reminded staff that she had volunteered to lead grief groups for seniors. Wendy Solorio stated that she would contact the Active Older Adults Program to see if she can get Commissioner Pina connected with someone in that regard. She mentioned that they recently started bereavement classes through that program and she will see if they can incorporate Commissioner Pina's request. C. Wendy Solorio reported that the Community Services Department recently received a request from the Mayor to examine senior isolation to understand the issue better and identify programming to address the problem. She asked for thoughts or ideas from the Commissioners. Commissioner Pina suggested encouraging seniors to bring a neighbor or friend to dances like the ones held at the Brookhurst Community Center. She also suggested that the key club through the Kiwanis need to complete community service hours and they could possibly include this as a project. She also suggested the Youth Council with John Nguyen; she will look up contact information and provide it for staff. D. Vice -Chair Kellison asked whether any presentations are planned for the next meeting or whether they should provide ideas for content. Chair Ramey stated that Commissioners are welcome to make suggestions for meeting items. Wendy Solorio also suggested that the Commission could make subcommittees to look into different topics as they desire. E. Council Member Barnes suggested that the Commissioners acknowledge older people in their communities that they respect. She announced that the WAND Barbeque would be held at Maxwell Park this year on Saturday, April 21. 8. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Ramey adjourned the meeting at 3:09 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, July 19, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
