ACTION TAKEN
1. CALL TO ORDER: The Youth Commission meeting was called to order at 4:11 p.m.by Chair Sandoval
2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Vice -Chair Retana led the Commission in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None

5. CORRESPONDENCE: None
6. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Vice -Chair Retana made a motion to approve the December 7, 2017 meeting minutes;
Commissioner Nguyen seconded the motion; the motion passed unanimously.
7. BUSINESS:
a) Logo, Motto, and Acronym Contest Submissions: Chair Sandoval began the first item of business by asking
commissioners to review the logo, motto, and acronym contest submissions created by Commissioner Galang.
Commissioner Galang mentioned to commissioners that he had the opportunity over the winter break to work on
several different logo options for the Youth Commission. He further explained why he chose the colors for the new
logo. He explained that the color yellow signified youth and reflected happiness, cheerfulness, and was an energetic
color; the contrast of the color black would give the logo an impressive look. He was also open to any
recommendations or suggestions from the Commissioners if they wanted to change the colors or add anything else
to the logos he had created. Commissioner Nguyen motioned to vote on the six designs; Vice -Chair Retana
seconded the motion; the motioned passed unanimously with logo number five receiving the most votes to become
the Youth Commission logo.

b) Hamilton College Study: Brian Chwan informed commissioners about a request that was received in January
from a graduate student from Hamilton College in New York State requesting their participation in a survey
regarding the effects of civic engagement on perceptions of government responsiveness. Brian mentioned that
the graduate student had reached out to multiple government agencies that had youth commissions, and asked
the commissioners to please see him after the meeting if they were interested in participating in this survey.
c) Youth Portal for the Anaheim City Website: Commissioner Flores not present to discuss.
d) Horizon Collaborative: Commissioner Flores not present to discuss.
e) The Next Small Leap: Commissioner Flores not present to discuss.
f) Create a Media Organization Operated by Young People: Commissioner Flores not present to discuss.
Commissioner Galang requested to discuss one of the topics Commissioner Flores presented at the last
meeting to understand how they can create a social media page to promote events or activities going on in the
city and provide information to the youth. Vice -Chair Retana asked whether the Commission would be able to
create an Instagram page, and if so, who would be in charge of it. Brian Chwan stated that the City of
Anaheim's IT department would most likely control the Instagram page; however, the Commission may be able
to provide IT with recommendations in regards to what the content would be.
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS:
a. Youth in Government Day: Brian Chwan explained the City's Youth in Government Day to the
Commissioners and announced that it will take place on Wednesday, April 25, 2018. He also informed
Commissioners that he was looking for two Youth Commissioners to volunteer to sit in on the planning
meetings and asked anyone interested to please see him after the meeting.
Brian Chwan encouraged Youth Commissioners to begin forming the three subcommittees that were
discussed at their December 7th meeting, specifically the three age groups: 0-5 year olds, 6-12 year
olds, and 13-17 year olds, to identify needs and make recommendations on ways to address the
needs to City Council at the end of their term. Chair Sandoval appointed the following subcommittees
to Commissioners who were present: 0-5 Years - Vice -Chair Retana, Commissioner Flynn; 6-12
Years - Vice -Chair Retana, Commissioner Galang; 3-17 Years — Commissioners Guerrero, Jasso, Ly,
Mai, Nguyen, Pham, and Urrea.
c. Community Services Director Brent Dennis addressed the Commission on things that were happening
in their community, including the Children's Festival, MUZEO, and the Steering Committee for
Planning for Parks.
8. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Sandoval adjourned the meeting at 4:56 p.m.
