CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Daniels. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: a) MUZEO – Bill Bailor, Chief Executive Officer: Bill Bailor introduced himself and provided a brief overview of the MUZEO facility and the current exhibits that are displayed throughout the MUZEO. b) Native Heritage Presentation: The following individuals, along with others from their tribes, attended the Commission meeting and provided a background overview of their tribe, their involvement with the community, and their view on the proposal for Anaheim to recognize Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples Day: 1) Virginia Carmelo 2) Michelle Castillo 3) Correna Chavez 4) Debra Becerra 5) Lupe Lopez 6) Mazatl Tepehyoldtzin 7) John Armstrong 8) David Vazquez 9) Patricia Adelekan 10) Ana Martinez 11) David Garcia 12) Maggie Acosta 13) Belia Mendoza 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the March 21, 2019 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Daniels made a motion to approve the March 21, 2019 minutes, seconded by Commissioner Squitier. There were five votes in favor to approve the minutes; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 6. PREVIOUS BUSINESS: a) Indigenous Peoples Day: The Commission discussed the background and history of tribes that exist in the City and the areas of where the tribes lived. Chair Hamida re-introduced the proposal to recognize Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples Day and explained that the proposal will be very broad and will not list individual tribes. Chair Hamida thanked the guests for their input and stated that the information provided will be taken into consideration when putting together the proposal. Chair Hamida also reminded the Commission that there is a process that must be followed when completing a proposal/recommendation for City Council approval. SUB-COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported the new exhibit, “The California Palette” of artist, Kym Del Los Reyes, will be installed in the upcoming week. b) Public Art Program: Chair Hamida tabled this item until the next Commission meeting. Chair Hamida stated an Art Mural Project recommendation will be presented to the Commission at a future meeting. c) Poet Laureate: Chair Hamida tabled this item until the next Commission meeting. d) Heritage: Commissioner Daniels stated the recommendation continues to move forward. 8. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Chair Hamida introduced the new Commissioner, Suman Marwah. Commissioner Marwah provided a brief overview of herself and her involvement with the community. Holly Unruh reported the Children’s Art Festival will be held on May 18th. Detailed information will be emailed out to the Commission. 9. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:59 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
