Cultural & Heritage 2019/05/16 MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center – 250 Center St., Anaheim, CA 92805 MAY 16, 2019 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Service Manager Mark Daniels, Vice Chair Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent William Camargo Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Suman Marwah Karl Squitier Karen Uyematsu COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Julie Brunette A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Camargo. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: a) CtrCity Anaheim Mural Project: Community and Economic Development staff, Laura Alcala and Jessica Garcia, introduced the artist who designed and installed the MUZEO 3D letters at the corner of Broadway and Anaheim Boulevard, Chance O’Neil, owner of Artisan of All Elements. An informational overview of the CtrCity Mural Program was presented to the Commission. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the April 18, 2019 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Daniels made a motion to approve the April 18, 2019 minutes, seconded by Commissioner Camargo. There were six votes in favor to approve the minutes; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 6. NEW BUSINESS: a) Culture: Commissioner Squitier reported a brief overview on what culture is and recommended a ‘Culture’ sub- committee be formed to discuss the future of culture. Chair Hamida asked if Commissioner Squitier would like to head the new sub-committee; Commissioner Squitier accepted. Chair Hamida made a motion to create a new sub- committee “Culture,” seconded by Commissioner Squitier. There were six votes in favor to approve the motion; Chair Hamida accepted the motion. 7. SUB-COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported the current exhibit, “The California Palette” of artist Kym Del Los Reyes, is currently open. The Anaheim Arts Association will display art over the summer. Holly also invited the Commission to make any recommendations for future exhibits towards the end of the year. b) Public Art Program: Commissioner Camargo reported he is currently working with the local schools regarding public art and getting the youth to become involved. c) Poet Laureate: Holly Unruh reported the selection committee will re-group to discuss the upcoming Poet Laureate process. d) Heritage: Commissioner Daniels stated an update will be provided after the City Budget is approved. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Chair Hamida reported the Indigenous Peoples Day item will be placed back on the Commission Agenda when further information is ready to be provided to the Commission. Commissioner Camargo reported he attended the Hands on Dance event and will be attending the Children’s Festival on May 18th. Holly Unruh reported the following:  Children’s Festival will be held at Pearson Park on May 18th from 10am-4pm.  Anaheim Coves Northern Extension grand opening will be on June 6th.  Flag Day parade will be on June 9th. Jane Newell reported the following:  The first Japan Fair will be held on May 25th from 11am-8pm.  The Greek Festival will be held at the Greek Orthodox Church this upcoming weekend. Vice Chair Daniels reported a Memorial Day event will be held at the Anaheim Cemetery. 9. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:59 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
