Cultural & Heritage 2019/06/20MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center – 250 Center St., Anaheim, CA 92805 JUNE 20, 2019 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Mark Daniels, Vice Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Service Manager William Camargo Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Suman Marwah Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Karl Squitier Karen Uyematsu COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Julie Brunette A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1. CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Daniels called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Squitier. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Mazatl Tecpatl, Anaheim resident, requested for an update on the Columbus Day proposal. 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: a) Assistance League of Anaheim Cultural Arts Support Program: Carolyn Carpenter introduced herself as a Board Member of the Assistance League of Anaheim Cultural Arts Support Program. Carolyn reported the Assistance League will be celebrating their 80th anniversary and provided a brief overview of what the Assistance League does for the community. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Vice Chair Daniels presented the May 16, 2019 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Squitier made a motion to approve the May 16, 2019 minutes, seconded by Commissioner Marwah. There were five votes in favor to approve the minutes; Vice Chair Daniels accepted the minutes. 6. NEW BUSINESS: a) Mural Proposal: Vice Chair Daniels reported this item will be tabled until the July Commission meeting. 7. SUB-COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported an artist is working with City staff to replace the Anaheim Arts Association art displayed. Holly will provide further information once it is finalized. b) Public Art Program: Commissioner Camargo reported an update will be presented at the next Commission meeting. c) Poet Laureate: Holly Unruh reported the Poet Laureate, Grant Hier, has met with City staff and the selection committee to discuss the upcoming Poet Laureate process. d) Heritage: Jane Newell reported staff will meet with the Community Services Director to look into the status of the proposal. Vice Chair Daniels reported he continues to research for possible heritage marker sites. e) Culture: Commissioner Squitier reported he will provide information on Culture at the August Commission meeting. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Holly Unruh reported the following:  The Pacific Symphony will be hosting “Canto De Anaheim” on August 31st at the Pearson Park Amphitheatre.  The “Summer Nights Under the Stars” events at Pearson Park Amphitheatre has begun and occurs on Friday nights throughout the summer.  The Concerts in the Canyon begins today at Peralta Park on Thursday night through August 1st. 9. ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair Daniels adjourned the meeting at 7:09 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
