RES-2020-070RESOLUTION NO. 2020 - 0 7 0 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM IN SOLIDARITY WITH PEACEFUL PROTEST AS AN AVENUE TO ACHIEVE CHANGE WHEREAS, Anaheim residents, businesses, and City Government support one another when we are hurting, and today is no exception; and WHEREAS, many of us feel anguish and pain caused by the horrific killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota while in police custody; and WHEREAS, the anguish, suffering, and pain caused by injustice, racism, and hate as evidenced by this senseless murder are reverberating throughout our country, county and city; and WHEREAS, we stand with the African American members of our community, with all people of color in our community, with all those who have been marginalized and disenfranchised, and with the entire Anaheim community who stands with them; and WHEREAS, Anaheim's city employees operate under a set of principles that values all members of our community; and WHEREAS, our Police Department is committed to community policing as the best way to protect public safety, and is proud to have been the first law enforcement agency in Orange County to require body -worn cameras and the only to utilize a Police Review Board; and WHEREAS, the Anaheim City Council supports peaceful protests in our City that can serve as a critical tool for public awareness, expression, and demand for change; and WHEREAS, we equally condemn violence, vandalism, and lawless riots, often fueled by outside agitators; and WHEREAS, the recent waves of demonstrations and protests in Anaheim were almost completely without violence or vandalism due to communication, respect, and partnership of our residents, businesses, and city workforce. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Anaheim stands in solidarity with those who protest peacefully against injustice, racism and hate; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Anaheim thanks its residents, businesses, and municipal employees who partnered to ensure that. these demonstrations were a positive, learning experience for the vast majority of those who participated.
