A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM
ENCOURAGING VOLUNTARY WATER CONSERVATION IN RESPONSE
TO CALIFORNIA'S DROUGHT
WHEREAS, California has experienced two years of severe
drought, requiring the California State Water Project and the
Federal Central Valley Project to draw heavily upon long-term
storage to meet water commitments statewide; and
WHEREAS, precipitation for the 1987-88 water year has been
substantially below normal, particularly in the watersheds of
the imported water supplies serving Southern California, and
many communities in the state may suffer water shortages; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern
California has requested that its member agencies urge their
consumers to conserve and reduce water use by ten percent; and
WHEREAS, the Public Utilities Department of the City of
Anaheim has for the past year informed consumers of the need to
eliminate wasteful uses of water and has provided educational
messages on ways to conserve water through various means
including its bill insert newsletter, speakers bureau, films,
brochures, and educational programs in Anaheim schools; and
WHEREAS, effective water conservation measures are
essential to reduce the risk and severity of potential water
shortages should the drought continue in 1989;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of Anaheim urges all water consumers of the Anaheim Public
Utilities Department to eliminate all wasteful uses of water
and to set a voluntary goal of reducing water use by ten
percent; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Public Utilities
Department continue its information and education programs to
keep Anaheim water consumers informed as to drought conditions
and the potential impact on Anaheim and to provide consumers
with alternative ways of conserving water; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these findings be, and they
are hereby, adopted by the City Council of the City of Anaheim.
