RES-2020-123 RESOLUTION NO. 2020 -123 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM IN HONOR OF UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG WHEREAS, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 15, 1933 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University, attended Harvard Law School, becoming the first female member of the Harvard Law Review and went on to receive her law degree from Columbia Law School in 1959; and WHEREAS, Justice Ginsburg taught at Rutgers University Law School and Columbia University where she became the school's first female tenured professor; and WHEREAS, Justice Ginsburg served as the director of the Women's Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union during the 1970s and argued six landmark cases on gender equality before the U.S. Supreme Court; and WHEREAS,Justice Ginsburg was appointed by President Carter as Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1980 where she served for 13 years; and WHEREAS, Justice Ginsburg accepted the nomination of President Bill Clinton for the U.S. Supreme Court and was sworn in on August 10, 1993, as the first Jewish woman and second female justice to serve in the U.S. Supreme Court; and WHEREAS, Justice Ginsburg wrote the Supreme Court's landmark decision in United States v. Virginia, which decided that the state-supported Virginia Military Institute could no longer exclude women from the school based on their gender; and WHEREAS, Justice Ginsburg continued to serve as a tireless champion of justice on the Supreme Court; and WHEREAS, after 27 years of serving as justice on the Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg passed away at the age of 87 on September 18, 2020; and WHEREAS, Justice Ginsburg will be remembered for her courageous leadership and legacy as a champion for marginalized groups and is also remembered for her reminder to all of us as she is quoted by saying "Woman belong in all places where decisions are being made".
