Cultural & Heritage 2019/09/19MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center – 250 Center St., Anaheim, CA 92805 September 19, 2019 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Mark Daniels, Vice Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Service Manager Julie Brunette Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent William Camargo Carolina Perez, Program Specialist Suman Marwah Karl Squitier Karen Uyematsu COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Rida Hamida, Chair A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1.CALL TO ORDER: Vice Chair Daniels called the meeting to order at 6:33 p.m. 2.PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Camargo. 3.UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Jordan Williams, resident of Anaheim, requested the Commission to allow local artists to participate in the input process for future murals. 4.SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 5.APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Vice Chair Daniels presented the August 15, 2019 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Vice Chair Daniels made a motion to approve the August 15, 2019 minutes, seconded by Commissioner Brunett. There were five votes in favor to approve the minutes; Vice Chair Daniels accepted the minutes. 6.SUB-COMMITTEES: a)Center Gallery: Holly Unruh thanked the sub-committee, Commissioner Brunette and Chair Hamida, for choosing the next artist, Ruben Zavala. Holly informed Commissioners they will receive an invitation and more information on the exhibit if an opening reception is scheduled. b)Public Art Program: Commissioner Camargo informed commissioners that Chair Hamida will email Holly Unruh an update for the next meeting. Commissioner Camargo also stated that he will continue to search for mural artists in the community and send the information to Chair Hamida. c)Poet Laureate: Commissioner Camargo reported that the selection committee established a timeline for the poet laureate application process, which will begin on October 1st. The selection committee plans to have a recommendation for the Commission at the January 16th meeting. Holly Unruh reported that they are excited about the process and notified commissioners that the application period will begin October 1st. d)Heritage: Vice Chair Daniels reported that they have a new library specialist, Nicole Grimes, with the Heritage Center who will be researching city plaque programs and plaque manufactures, and will contact the Public Works Department for a cost estimate on plaque installation. Vice Chair Daniels also reported once the research is completed, the sub-committee will meet and draft an operational document for the Anaheim Heritage Marker Program to present at the October meeting. ITEM #01 Cultural and Heritage Commission 09/19/19 Page 2 A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N Jane Newell reported that Nicole Grimes has been working on the project for the past week and is hopeful that she will have something to present to the sub-committee in the next two weeks. e) Culture: Commissioner Squitier expressed his interest in focus on Culture and presented a document to those present at the meeting with his topics of interest. He indicated that the commissioners can take a look at the information presented and discuss at a meeting in the future. 7. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Commissioner Camargo reported that “Canto de Anaheim” was a success and there is a second showing on October 5th at Anaheim High School’s Cook Auditorium. Commissioner Squitier proposed adding something equivalent to white boards around the city, where young people can go and express themselves. Vice Chair Daniels and Commissioner Brunette liked the idea of allowing young people expressing themselves and suggested drafting a comprehensive plan for the next meeting. Holly Unruh reported the following:  Fab Four Concert is on September 21st at Pearson Park Amphitheater  Anaheim Mariachi Festival is on September 26th at Pearson Amphitheater  A volunteer event for District 6 will be held at Oak Canyon Nature Center on October 5th with Council Member O’Neil  The Anaheim Health & Citizenship Fair is on September 21st and September 22nd at the Anaheim Convention Center 8. ADJOURNMENT: Vice Chair Daniels adjourned the meeting at 7:03 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
