RESOLUTION NO.
87R-440
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ANAHEIM SUPPORTING "THE TAXPAYERS FOR A
CENTRALIZED JAIL" IN ITS OPPOSITION TO THE
GYPSUM/COAL CANYON JAIL.
WHEREAS, the proposed Gypsum/Coal Canyon jail site is in
the sphere of influence of the City of Anaheim, and is not
consistent with Anaheim's general plan; and
WHEREAS, a proposed jail in Gypsum/Coal Canyons will
Further exacerbate the transportation problems on the 91 Freeway,
57 Freeway and Sand Canyon Road; and
WHEREAS, the safety of Anaheim and Yorba Linda
!1eighborhoods will be threatened by a jail located at Gypsum/Coal
Canyon; and
WHEREAS, this site is a significant distance from the
central courthouse thereby increasing the cost of prisoner
transportation; and
WHEREAS, the selection of Gypsum/Coal Canyon as a jail
site is not the most cost effective solution to Orange County's
jail problem; and
WHEREAS, citizen groups in both Anaheim Hills and Yorba
Linda have been actively opposing the Gypsum/Coal Canyon jail
site; and
WHEREAS, these citizen groups have organized into the
"Taxpayers for a Centralized Jail" organization to force the
County to consider an economically viable alternative to the
Gypsum/Coal Canyon jail site.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Anaheim supports the "Taxpayers for Centralized Jail"
in its efforts to minimize the cost of County jail construction
and on going operation and transportation costs; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages
all County voters to sign the initiative petition circulated by
the "Taxpayers for a Centralized Jail" to allow the voters of
Orange County a voice in determining this critical County issue.
