A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ANAHEIM ACCEPTING DONATED STEM PLAY KITS AND
RIGAMAJIGO SETS FROM KABOOM! AND AUTHORIZING
THE ACCEPTANCE OF SUCH ITEMS ON BEHALF OF THE
CITY.
WHEREAS, since June 2011 with the installation of the Edison Park Playground
through a KaBOOM! grant and volunteers from Disney and the local neighborhood, the City of
Anaheim has enjoyed a playground building and renovation relationship with KaBOOM!; and
WHEREAS, AbbVie, a pharmaceutical company, expressed an interest in donating
STEM kits to communities in the United States to create interest in children to learn about and
pursue careers in science; and
WHEREAS, KaBOOM! has contracted with AbbVie and approached the City of
Anaheim Community Services Department with an opportunity to distribute STEM kits to children
throughout Anaheim through the City's STEM Adventures program and Anaheim Public Library
STEM; and
WHEREAS, the Anaheim Public Library has a robust STEM Program and the
STEM Kits will be used in the STEM Adventures program, which provides regular hands-on
programming at Anaheim libraries and brings free STEM programs to a variety of community,
neighborhood, park, and library sites throughout the City and also targets children living in high
density and low income areas in the City that do not have regular access to afterschool learning
opportunities due to financial constraints and transportation hardships; and
WHEREAS, Rigamajig® creates playful, cooperative learning communities,
through means of collaborative building and child -directed play and enables easily accessible,
cognitively challenging play opportunities for children of any age in any environment; and
WHEREAS, Rigamajig® fits with principles of STEM and STEM education,
which promote focus on science, technology, engineering, math, and art through hands-on,
inquiry -based learning to provide children opportunities for creativity, innovation, collaboration,
and critical thinking; and
WHEREAS, it is in the public interest to accept the donated STEM and Rigamajig®
kits.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
Anaheim as follows:
1. The City Council hereby accepts the STEM Play Kits and two (2) Rigamajig® sets
on behalf of the City and approves the Play Products Program Donation Letter
(Letter) and authorizes the Director of Community Services, or designee, to execute
the Letter on behalf of the City, and to take all actions as may be necessary or
advisable to implement the Letter.
2. The Director of Community Services or designee is further authorized and directed,
on behalf of the City, to take any and all actions necessary or advisable related to
the STEM Kits and Rigamajig® set donations.
3. The donated STEM Kits and Rigamajig® sets are to be used by the City of Anaheim
Public Library for the City's STEM Adventures program and Anaheim Public
Library STEM and any other related City STEM Program uses.
