Cultural & Heritage 2019/11/21MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION Downtown Anaheim Community Center – 250 Center St., Anaheim, CA 92805 November 21, 2019 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Service Manager Mark Daniels, Vice Chair Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Julie Brunette Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Suman Marwah COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: William Camargo Karl Squitier Karen Uyematsu A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1.CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:48 p.m. 2.PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice Chair Daniels. 3.UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: Anaheim residents, including Mazatl Tecpatl Tepehyolotzin and Diana Chillin, shared information for the recommendation of establishing the Indigenous Peoples Day in the City of Anaheim. 4.SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 5.APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the October 17, 2019 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Vice Chair Daniels made a motion to approve the October 17, 2019 minutes, seconded by Chair Hamida. There were four votes in favor to approve the minutes; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 6.NEW BUSINESS: a)Indigenous Peoples Day: Chair Hamida presented the recommendation proposal for Indigenous Peoples Day in the City of Anaheim to the Commission. A discussion was held by the Commission regarding the proposal. Vice Chair Daniels made a motion to approve the recommendation to the City Council for the Indigenous Peoples Day proposal, seconded by Commissioner Marwah. There were four votes in favor to approve the recommendation; Chair Hamida accepted the motion. b)Mural Proposal: Chair Hamida recommended to table the proposal to the January 2020 Commission meeting. 7.SUB-COMMITTEES: a)Center Gallery: Commissioner Brunette reviewed the applications that have been submitted for the Center Gallery. Chair Hamida will also review the applications and the sub-committee will meet to discuss possible future exhibits. b)Public Art Program: Holly Unruh reported the City is currently working on the RFP to hire a consultant to develop the Public Art Plan. The sub-committee will meet to discuss the process. c)Poet Laureate: Holly Unruh reported the application deadline is November 22nd. The application deadline may be extended if needed. The selection committee will hold interviews in January. d)Heritage: Jane Newell presented the recommendation proposal for the Anaheim Heritage Policies and Procedures to the Commission. Vice Chair Daniels made a motion to approve the recommendation to the City Council for the Anaheim Heritage Policies and Procedures, seconded by Commissioner Brunette. There were four votes in favor to approve the recommendation; Chair Hamida accepted the motion. This item will be discussed at the January meeting. 8. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Jane Newell reported the following:  MUZEO Exhibit “ MUZEO Express” will be open from November 20, 2019 to January 26, 2020.  The Victorian Christmas Open House at Founders’ Park will be held on December 7, 2019. Holly Unruh shared the new Anaheim Guide with the Commission and reported the following:  WAND Holiday Tree Lighting on December 6th at Twila Reid Park  Downtown Anaheim Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 7th  Home for the Holidays Dog event on December 14th at Olive Hills Dog Park 9. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:27 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Anaheim Community Center, 250 Center St., Anaheim CA 92805.
