Cultural & Heritage 2020/11/19 MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION TELECONFERENCE November 19, 2020 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Service Manager William Camargo, Vice Chair Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Suman Marwah Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Karen Uyematsu COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Julie Brunette A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Marwah. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the October 15, 2020 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Chair Hamida made a motion to approve the October 15, 2020 minutes, seconded by Vice Chair Camargo. There were four votes in favor to approve the minutes; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 6. SUB-COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported virtual exhibits continue to be held online. Offerings have been expanded to have a youth art show. Staff will be reaching out to local schools requesting youth to share art virtually. b) Public Art Program: Holly Unruh reported staff is working with the consultant that was selected to work on the Public Art Plan. A stakeholder interview list is being put together as well as focus groups to reach out for public engagement in forms of online surveys and virtual meetings. Chair Hamida and Commissioner Camargo will be included in the stakeholder interviews. Holly Unruh and Jane Newell asked the Commission to contact them with a list of public art and their locations to include in the city inventory. c) Poet Laureate: Holly Unruh reported the Resolution and the Ordinance will be amended. d) Heritage: Jane Newell reported the Heritage Marker Program will be included in the Public Art Plan. e) Culture: 1) Proposal for Recognition of Little Arabia: Chair Hamida shared the proposal for the Little Arabia District Formal Designation Recommendation. The Commission held a discussion regarding the area on Brookhurst Street, possible recognition signage, and the business district support. Chair Hamida received support for this proposal from Commissioners present. Chair Hamida made a motion to support the Formal Designation Recommendation to City Council to recognize Little Arabia on Brookhurst Street, seconded by Commissioner Uyematsu. There were four votes in favor; Chair Hamida accepted the motion. 7. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Cultural and Heritage Commission 11/19/20 Page 2 A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N Holly Unruh reported the following:  WAND will host a modified Tree Lighting at Twila Reid Park.  Downtown Nutcracker Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting will be planning a virtual event. Jane Newell reported the following:  There is a window display, “Steampunk Anaheim History Christmas Tree,” installed at Heritage Services.  115 photographs of the city were included in a photo book, “Orange County Memories,” that will be available on November 25th and December 5th online. Vice Chair Camargo reported there are two upcoming virtual programs held through the Muzeo on Zoom. A workshop will be held on December 11th and a guest artist on December 17th. 8. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:09 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. via Teleconference.
