Cultural & Heritage 2021/02/18MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION TELECONFERENCE February 18, 2021 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: Rida Hamida, Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Service Manager William Camargo, Vice Chair Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Alejandrina Arellano Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Karen Uyematsu COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Suman Marwah A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Hamida called the meeting to order at 6:53 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Arellano. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Hamida presented the November 19, 2020 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Vice Chair Camargo made a motion to approve the November 19, 2020 minutes, seconded by Commission Uyematsu. There were four votes in favor to approve the minutes; Chair Hamida accepted the minutes. 6. SUB-COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported the Center Gallery remains closed due to the pandemic and virtual exhibits continue to be available online. Staff is also working with the local schools to have youth submit art to be shared in a virtual youth art exhibit. Chair Hamida provided a brief overview of the sub-committee and asked if any Commissioners would like to be a part on the sub-committee; Commissioner Arellano stated she is interested. Chair Hamida appointed Commissioner Arellano to join the sub-committee. b) Public Art Program: Holly Unruh reported staff continues to work with the consultant on the Public Art Master Plan. Stakeholder interviews have been held with various agencies and Chair Hamida and Commissioner Camargo were able to participate in the interviews. The public engagement process will begin by reaching out to each district with a public art survey, a website where locations can be chosen to add public art, and information about locations that already have public art. The upcoming Neighborhood District virtual meetings will include information for Public Art and Commissioners are encouraged to attend the meeting for their district. c) Poet Laureate: Vice Chair Camargo reported the Resolution and the Ordinance will be amended. Holly Unruh also reported that due to the pandemic, if a Poet Laureate were selected, they would not be able to attend various community outreach events as the previous Poet Laureate did. d) Heritage: Jane Newell reported the Heritage Marker Program would be included in the Public Art Plan. e) Culture: Chair Hamida reported each Council Member has received the proposal for the Little Arabia District Formal Designation Recommendation, but it has not been placed on the City Council Agenda yet. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Holly Unruh reported the following:  A Virtual Volunteer Recognition Event will be held on March 31, 2021.  Maxwell Dog Park will be opening in May 2021. Jane Newell reported the following:  Three different virtual tours have been created for Founders’ Park and the local schools have access to view them. The public will be able to view the virtual tours in early March.  Virtual Cultural Programming event information will be shared with the Commission. Commissioner Camargo reported the following:  A couple books about his work in Anaheim will be published.  He is on the Elementary School Board Ethnic Studies Culturally Responsive Task Force where he plans to share public art information, historical Anaheim ethics information, and exhibitions and lectures that he is hosting throughout the country.  Adults 65 and older can register to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at Magnolia High School.  Please contact Commissioner Camargo if you know of any businesses that would like to make donations towards grocery drop-offs to families affected by COVID-19. Chair Hamida reported the following:  Cultural Projects hosted since last meeting in November: o Fighting Hate One Halal turkey At a Time Event – partnered with Fresh Choice and Mothers Market to provide families with feasts and bill assistance. o Fighting Hate One Tamale At A Time Event – collaborated with local businesses to have vegan tamales distributed to the community. o Fighting Hate One Falafel At A Time Event – feast giveaway to families. o Fighting Hate One Conchita At A Time Event – planning a pan dulce giveaway to the community.  Chair Hamida thanked staff and the Commission for the hard work completed during her terms with the Commission. 8. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Hamida adjourned the meeting at 7:47 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. via Teleconference.
