Cultural & Heritage 2021/04/15MINUTES CULTURAL AND HERITAGE COMMISSION TELECONFERENCE April 15, 2021 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: STAFF PRESENT: William Camargo, Chair Jane Newell, Heritage Service Manager Alejandrina Arellano Holly Unruh, Community Services Superintendent Kristen Maahs Eleanor Granflor, Sr. Secretary Karen Uyematsu COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Suman Marwah Robert Sanchez A G E N D A A C T I O N T A K E N 1. CALL TO ORDER: Chair Camargo called the meeting to order at 6:34 p.m. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commissioner Uyematsu. 3. UNSCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: None. 4. SCHEDULED PUBLIC COMMUNICATION: a) Cultural Arts Building: Grace Stepter, Interim Director for Community and Economic Development, presented information on the Cultural Arts Building which is a housing asset under the Community and Economic Development Land Asset Plan. The information provided included the Redevelopment Agency and Redevelopment Plan, land components of the City, the history of the building, the dissolution of the Redevelopment Agency, and the use of the building by Anaheim Ballet and operations through the Community Services Department. Jane Newell provided information regarding the Anaheim Colony Historic District. Sjany Larson-Cash, Interim Director for Community Services, provided information within the cooperative agreement between the City and Anaheim Ballet regarding assisting the Anaheim Ballet with the acquisition or the lease of a replacement site for their program, funding options for interior and/or exterior renovations of the building or another potential site, and funding for operations of the ballet. 5. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Chair Camargo presented the March 18, 2021 minutes to the Commissioners for changes or corrections. Commissioner Uyematsu made a motion to approve the March 18, 2021 minutes, seconded by Chair Camargo. There were four votes in favor to approve the minutes; Chair Camargo accepted the minutes. 6. NEW BUSINESS a) Selection of Vice Chair: Commissioner Arellano nominated Commissioner Uyematsu for Vice Chair. There were four votes in favor; Commissioner Uyematsu will now be Vice Chair of the Commission. 7. SUB-COMMITTEES: a) Center Gallery: Holly Unruh reported the Center Gallery continues to exhibit the youth resident artists who are currently being showcased on the Center Gallery Facebook page. b) Public Art Program: Chair Camargo and Holly Unruh encouraged the Commission to register for the district workshops for the Public Art Plan. c) Poet Laureate: Chair Camargo reported the Poet Laureate selection continues to be on hold. Holly Unruh reported April is the month of Poetry. d) Heritage: Jane Newell reported further information will be shared at the May Commission meeting. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS: Chair Camargo reported the MUZEO continues to exhibit local talent. The current exhibit, “El Jale” exhibit photographs by Alkaid Ramirez outdoors in the Carnegie Plaza. Holly Unruh reported the Volunteer Recognition Event can still be viewed. The link is still available on the city website. Jane Newell reported the Heritage Seed Kit Giveaway held at Founders’ Park was well attended and 143 kits were provided to those who drove by. The buildings at Founders’ Park will open on May 1st by reservation; the theme will be the 1918-1920 Spanish Flu Pandemic. Jane also reported that posters for the Valencia Orange Show have been installed on the windows of the Heritage Center. 9. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Camargo adjourned the meeting at 7:30 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. via Teleconference.
