RESOLUTION NO. 1593
RESOLUTION IN THE MATTER OF COLORADO RIVER DIVERSIONS.
WHEREAS, the communities in the semi -arid coastal plains of
Southern California, due to their ever increasing population and
steadily declining underground water levels, must necessarily im-
port supplemental water supplies from streams originating in distant
mountain ranges in order to supply the demand for domestic and in-
dustrial use and for irrigation; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of twenty -two cities, including the City
of Anaheim, comprising The Metropolitan Water District of Southern
California, relying upon long- established contracts with the Federal
Government, have assumed a bonded indebtedness of approximately
$200,000,000 which has been expended in the construction of an
aqueduct and appurtenant works for bringing Colorado River water to
their communities; and
WHEREAS, any diminution of this city's rights in Colorado River
water due to additional diversions, especially that now proposed in
Arizona, is viewed with alarm by the people of this city.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Anaheim, that said City Council go on record as urging the Con-
gress to pass, as soon as possible, Senate Joint Resolution 145 and
House Joint Resolution 226, authorizing an impartial settlement of
the California-Arizona water dispute by referring the question to
the United States Supreme Court for adjudication; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that said City Council is opposed to any
new projects proposing diversion of Lower Colorado River water until
the Supreme Court renders its decision in the above matter; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be sent
to each Representative and Senator in the Congress from California
and to the chairmen of the Public Lands and Judiciary Committees in
the House of Representatives and of the Public Lands Committee in
the Senate.
