1974-516WHEREAS, the New Melones Dam on the Stanislaus River
has been authorized by the United States Congress; and
WHEREAS, $52,000,000 has already been spent on initial
phases of construction of said Dam; and
WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court has rejected
a suit filed by opponents of the project; and
WHEREAS, the State Legislature has urged the speediest
possible construction of the project to provide necessary flood
control, storage, power generation and recreational benefits on
a regional basis; and
WHEREAS, opponents to the project have qualified by
an initiative measure legislation to stop construction of the
Dam; and
WHEREAS, the wording of the initiative measure may
mislead the state -wide public into making a decision based on
distortions of fact; and
WHEREAS, such initiative action, if passed, would
severely impede construction programs for meeting energy, water,
recreational, flood control and other needs throughout Cali-
fornia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of Anaheim that it does hereby oppose the initiative
petition entitled "Proposition 17" designed to stop the New
Melones Dam project and endorses a "Nof" vote on Proposition 17
in the November 5, 1974 General Election.
THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION is approved and signed by
me this 15th day of October, 1974.
