1985-374RESOLUTION NO. 85R-374 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM URGING THE DISCONTINUATION OF ARMED FORCES HELICOPTER TRAINING MISSIONS OVER DENSELY POPULATED PORTIONS OF ORANGE COUNTY. WHEREAS, Orange County is the sixth most populous County in the United States; and WHEREAS, of the 2.2 million residents in Orange County over 500,000 live along Katella Avenue; and WHEREAS, Katella Avenue traverses the communities of Los Alamitos, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Orange and Villa Park; and WHEREAS, the Katella Avenue Corridor is the most densely populated region of the County with over 5,000 residents per square mile; and WHEREAS, the California Army Air National Guard uses Katella Avenue for visual flight navigation from the Los Alamitos Army Air National Guard Reserve Station while conducting helicopter training missions in the Santa Ana Mountains; and WHEREAS, the United States Marine Corps Air Station Tustin Helicopter facility also conducts training missions in the Santa Ana Mountains; and WHEREAS, helicopters are maintenance intensive aircraft that have little margin for error in the event of a mechanical malfunction; and WHEREAS, helicopters conduct training missions along the Katella Avenue Corridor from the Los Alamitos Army Air National Guard Reserve Center and the E1 Toro Marine Corp Helicopter Station in Tustin. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Anaheim that while the City of Anaheim recognizes the importance of these training missions, it believes that an important public safety question is raised by conducting them over highly urbanized population centers in Orange County. BE I.T FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Anaheim requests the Army Air National Guard and the United States Marine Corps to investigate alternate helicopter training routes that avoid the densely populated centers of Orange County. -1- BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the United States Marine Corps, California Army National Guard, City of Los Alamitos, City of Cypress, City of Stanton, City of Orange, City of Villa Park, and Congressman William E. Dannemeyer. THE FOREGOING RESOLUTION is approved and adopted by the City Council of the City of Anaheim this 20th day of August, 1985.
